Apollo 13 service module

Interesting picture.

I didn't realize it at the time, being only 10 years old, but the Apollo 13 mission was probably one of the worst periods of my dad's life. He was a government quality assurance inspector at Allison in Indianapolis, IN, where the titanium fuel tanks for both the service module and lunar module were made, and he was part of the government team that inspected them. When there was an explosion in the SM, an obvious possible source was the fuel, and everyone was wondering if they had done something wrong or missed something. My sister later told me that Dad threw up in a wastebasket when he first got the news (we got a phone call at home about it). This really shocked me, as Dad was a veteran of the Depression and WWII, and was not at all prone to displays of emotion. It was quite awhile before the oxygen system was determined to be the source of the problem, much to his relief I'm sure.

Re: OPEN CARRY COUNTDOWN-

If we are going to show F-16s, they should at least be Texas F-16s: :txflag:

On a big gun the caliber is the length of the barrel in units = diameter of the bore. The barrels on the Iowa are 50x16" long = 800 inches = 66.66 feet (so the caliber is "50"). Why, I dunno, you'd have to ask the Navy. My understanding this is how the Navy measures barrel length, the Army uses feet.

I think we have an arty guy on the board, maybe he can give the why.

Umm, I think I just caught Beiruty trying to sneak one past us. That looks like a P-38 to me. Built several models of it when I was a kid, and my Dad worked on those as a Army Air Corps mechanic.

You tryin' to reset the clock there, buddy?

Re: OPEN CARRY COUNTDOWN-

And for today:

A Lieutenant G.W. Bush of the Texas ANG flew the F-102A. It was not the safest fighter of its time.

ETA: Thinking about planes'n'stuff just prompted me to remember that today's date, 20 Sep, was my first day of Active Duty in the USAF. In 1982. Shazam, that seems like just yesterday and a long time ago both.
