In the early 1880s the first railroad, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe, reached the town, and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas was built through in 1882. Nevertheless, Temple, established by the Santa Fe eight miles to the northeast in 1881 and aggressively promoted by the railroad, quickly surpassed Belton as the county's largest town.
The railroad provided medical care for its workers, and in 1892 appointed a certain Dr. Scott as its chief surgeon. He acquired a Dr White as his partner in 1897, and together they established a new hospital, Temple Sanitorium. Later the name was changed to Scott and White Hospital. It was a teaching hospital and further established a nursing school. In some of the older original S&W buildings there are photos in the hallways of the nurse graduates and other medical subjects of that era. Fascinating stuff to history buffs.
