Re: Hearing damage +P

Well, after a week the hearing damage has not improved at all. I have fired over 2,000 rounds in the last 10 years without hearing protection. Most of those were shooting hogs, but some were coyotes, deer, and snakes. I cannot say how much of my hearing loss is due to repeated firing without hearing protection and how much is due to the episode last week with the +P rounds. But I do know this. I will NEVER carry +P rounds in my EDC gun again. Like Allons said, what I have left will stay in a box in my night stand. I will trust my marksmanship to suffice with regular rounds.

I have made an appointment with an audiologist. Hearing aids are now in my future. It would not be a stretch to saw that wild hogs, and the attempt to control them, have made me deaf.

And as for the comment The Annoyed Man said about keeping electronic ear pro close at hand, that doesn't really work for me. It would be great if I could, but it's just not practical. I may see hogs when mowing on the tractor, sitting on my porch drinking coffee, or walking to the mailbox.

Now anytime I’m shooting I have at least one type of ear pro, and I really like to double up. The hog problem unfortunately won’t be solved by hunting/trapping. There will eventually have to be a systemic exhaustive plan to eradicate or highly reduce the pests. Like mentioned earlier, one male and female can very quickly turn into thousands.
The pictures posted are definitely true of the damage. Hunting will not eliminate the problem. It is said that a sow has a litter of 6 every few months and 12 survive. We need to develop hog birth control. I always watch the videos where they try to kill the biggest boar. Seems like killing the piglets would be better and better eating. The good news is that it opens up some great hunting opportunity. The bad news is that you need some expensive gear (thermal) and friendly landowners. I need to invite some Yankees down here.
I am kind of surprised more land owners don't offer free access to kill the pigs. I suppose it is a liability issue as much as anything. Sure as heck some clown would shoot themselves and then sue the land owner.
It's not a liability issue. Sure as heck some clown would shoot a prize bull or a horse. City folks don't realize how many things of value are within range of their guns when they come out to the sticks. If they are not well experienced hunters, and we do not now know them...., uh uh. Ain't gonna happen.

This just boggles the imagination. What you describe is worse than a rat infestation.
You can't really imagine it. You have to see it to believe it. It's quite common to see 20 or 30 at a time. After they have torn up an area, you can't hardly cut hay without tearing up your equipment. It's too rough to mow. And the only way to get it smooth again is to pulverize the soil with plows or a tiller, then drag it and replant the grass as needed.

This isn't my place, but it's typical of the problem we face in East Texas. This photo was taken at a doctor's office in Palestine. We had to put an electric fence around our yard to keep them from digging up the yard and the flower beds. Our yard has been tore up like this several times. There is no way mow the yard after something like this happens without just rebuilding it.

Here's the article the photo came from.

Consider that they reach breeding age at 6 months old. They have 6 to 8 pigs per litter, and can have two to three litters per year depending on health condition and weather. So figure one sow will average 15 pigs per year. Half of those are female. The next year you have 8 sows that will have 15 or more pigs each. That's 120 hogs plus the 16 from last year. Now you have 136 hogs. Do the math on those numbers over a few years if nobody is trapping them and killing them. You will begin to see why my statement of killing 100 hogs per year doesn't seem so far fetched.

Harvest or let lay there while you continued on your ear ache way?
Well, I said that I fired 5 rounds, striking two. The hogs were maybe 30 yards away and running. I was luck to hit two of them. Neither one fell, but they flinched hard and continued to run. The buzzards showed me that afternoon where they were. That was actually the best out come for me since my freezer is full of hog meat. I didn't have to deal with stinky dead carcasses by the driveway when I got home from work that afternoon. I have killed about 50 hogs so far this year on my property. I don't do it for sport, and I can't eat that much meat. The damage they do to the land is almost beyond description.

Allons wrote: Thu Jun 14, 2018 7:06 pm Yes, they are much louder. I was at the range once with +p ammo loaded in my gun and fired off 2 quick shots without hearing protection, I can attest to it being much louder than any ball ammo or any hollow point that I ever fired. It hurt for awhile, I guess I got lucky because I only fired two rounds though.
Thanks for that info. I have to be more careful.

Maybe if 'silencers' weren't illegal/highly regulated, you wouldn't have had this problem... :/
One can only hope.

flechero wrote: Thu Jun 14, 2018 7:35 pm Depends on the round... I'm assuming 9mm +P since most carry 9mm. Some are worse than others, but none are considered "safe" without protection. (except Calibre's and the like)

I never used to wear plugs rifle hunting and never noticed the shots... but a single round on the range with my 270 and it felt like a grenade exploded in my ear.
Yes it was 9mm. I've fired hundreds of rounds with .270 and maybe 2,00 .556 without hearing protection. My hearing is of course not what it once was. But today was different. I think the sound echoed off the truck and the pain was noticeable.

Hearing damage +P

Has anyone in the forum shot +P rounds without hearing protection? If so, I would like to hear your comments on the effect of the sound on your hearing, and possible hearing damage. Let me explain.

I was leaving for work this morning when about 20 wild hogs crossed the driveway in front of me. The only gun in my truck was the one on my belt that was loaded with +P defense rounds. I jumped out of the truck and fired 5 rounds towards them striking two. I have fired a gun many, many times in my life while hunting without any hearing protection. But this time was different. I felt a sharp pain in my ears immediately with the gunshots. The rest of the day my hearing was significantly impaired.

Are +P rounds significantly much louder than off the shelf ball ammo? I have fired them many times but always with hearing protection. I fear the damage is permanent.
