Re: Classy: University of Tampa Professor Says Texas Deserved a Hurricane Because The State Voted For Trump

As an intellectual, this professor's comments irk me in more ways than one. Putting aside the audacity of his statement and the moral outrage that accompanies that element, let's look at the factual accuracy of his assumptions and judge whether his comments should incite intellectual outrage as well:

In the Republican primary only 27% of Texans voted for Trump, while 44% voted for Cruz. Trump was Texas Republicans' second choice for president, so it is not even fair to say we voted for him. Based on the primary results, it can be estimated that more than two-thirds of Trump's Texas votes came from reluctant voters who simply viewed him as being better than Clinton. Texas, statistically speaking, voted for Cruz.

18 counties have been hit hard enough that Gov. Abbott has declared they should seek FEMA aid. If you add up the total votes for Clinton and Trump in those 18 counties, you will see that 973,971 voted for Trump, but 1,026,322 voted for Clinton. Based on the election results, more registered Democrats were endangered or displaced by Harvey than registered Republicans.

This bozo was not only extremely inflammatory and inconsiderate, he was also factually off-base by a YUUUGE margin.
Shame on him as an American, shame on him as an authority figure, and especially shame on him as a scholar.
