I don't think it's that they allow the savages to do what they want as much as it is that they can't do anything to stop them and are unwilling to allow any civilized folks to defend themselves. That's what I think is madness.

For British politicians and senior police officers the idea that the country should switch having all officers carrying firearms would be rather like slaying a sacred cow. There are two sacred things in a largely secular British culture. The first is the National Health Service, the second is that unlike other countries we do not need to arm our police. To challenge either of those beliefs is socio/political heresy, therefore it is a career ending move for any politician to suggest changing them. Thus they are stuck, all they can do is slip further and further down the hole just wishing the somehow the problem will just go away.

It would not stop a bullet (in UK the risk from blades is greater than that from bullets) but it might blunt a knife attack enough to give you time to either run or arm yourself with some sort of improvised weapon (stick, bottle, chair etc). It should be thinner than Kevlar and also "breathe better as well as easy to clean.

I am not sure if you people realise that in the UK, mace/pepper spray etc are classified as "offensive weapons" they are illegal to buy from any source. When I lived there I bought some Serrano peppers cooked them slowly on the stove for a day or so, then let them soak for another could of day before straining them through a filter and mixing the solution 50/50 with some cheap vodka (to prevent it going bad) then adding it to a small hand pump-up garden sprayer. I sprayed some in the bath tub and took a sniff - It was BAD and it was not even on Me. So with the sprayer in my left hand and my Army officer's sword in my right that was my home defense option in the land of no legal guns.

When you have nationally funded medical services then it is in the government's interest that you should never at any time be injured in any way. In their ideal world all people would have to live in individual padded cells wearing protective clothing, be fed food that can be eaten without any sharp implements, in quantities that ensure no weight gain, should never be allowed to see or hear anything that might give them emotional stress

The more I see the happier I am that I no longer live in that country. Before I left I had watched things slide further and further down the stupid path. I believe that there will be moves to outlaw the ownership of kitchen knives along with screwdrivers etc. You will be required to buy all your meat and vegetables "pre chopped" if you need something unscrewed you will have to call in a licensed "professional" who is authorised to own "dangerous tools". After that ownership of gas will be made illegal, you might try to make your own flame thrower. If you are still allowed to own a car it will have to be electric as will lawn mowers and trimmers etc, except they will probable restricted to licensed professionals as well. About 15 years ago I once joked with some co-workers that in future it would be a crime to get out of bed without first putting on a crash helmet, now I am not so sure it is funny anymore.
