I always wondered why they never shortened it and seated one of Hatcher's 172 gr boat tail spitzers at the original OAL. It seems like that round in an M1A1 carbine with a short barrel, suppressor, paratrooper folding stock and night sights would've been the ideal covert rifle for the era.

Basically inventing the .300 Whisper 40 years before JD Jones.
