Well, not in Texas. The Pennsylvania government has ordered all liquor stores in the state to shut down. There were some articles about how they should reconsider this because people could go into withdrawal and die from it.

But PA has always had very strict laws on liquor. They own all of the liquor stores and no one can sell liquor other than by the drink but them. So they cannot even close their own stores without arguments now.
This is actually true. Alcohol withdrawal and Xanax are the only two addictive substances that can actually kill a person in withdrawal. The others just make you think your going to die. The thought of it did cross my mind when they decided to allow liquor stores to remain open.

I was in Walmart on Tuesday picking up a water hose. The place was full of people buying everything but food. They were picking the garden department clean. I was in line behind a lady with three kids and a cart full of gardening supplies and plants. I kind of found it comforting that not everyone has been completely scared out of their minds.
There are places where the local government has ordered "non-essential" businesses (that sell, for example, bird seed or furniture) to shut down, while allowing "essential business" (that sell food, gas, and the like) to remain open. Then the "non-essential" businesses complained that the "essential businesses" who had multiple product lines (like Walmart) were being allowed to sell "non-essential" products like birdseed and furniture, to the obvious disadvantage of the "non-essential" businesses selling the same thing that were forced to close. So now there are orders requiring the "essential businesses" to sell only "essential products."

Happy that Texas, at least my part of it, has avoided this so far.
Wow! IMHO the government should not be "ORDERING" any legal business to shut down. It is OK to suggest it but to require it is stepping over the line. If this government intrusion on our rights continues, they will eventually get around to guns. Imagine being told that all LTC's were "temporarily" suspended in an effort to protect those who don't have an LTC from being shot. Sounds crazy but it is no different than requiring places to close in order to protect people from contracting China Virus. I don't like any of this. Not one bit!

Re: Need help with “Essential Businesses”

chasfm11 wrote: Sat Mar 28, 2020 7:55 am I have several thoughts.

1. There was some discussion among the political leaders that there should be a "consistent" approach to the restrictions. Collin County is taking the heat for declaring all businesses essential because people from surrounding communities could go there to shop. I thought: consistent approach..hummmm. Welcome to gun control laws.

2. In that regard, several of the counties seem to copy-catting Dallas County. I would get that some of smaller counties around Harris or Travis might do the same. That is why the executive orders have the same language.

3. No politician is going to risk closing the liquor stores. It is said about code enforcement that they do it to the level the public will tolerate. I think closing liquor stores would exceed the public's tolerance.

4. Veering a bit off topic, NY is one of the hot spots for the virus. In February and even early March, their political leaders were encouraging risky behavior in public gatherings. The big Chinese new year's celebration is what bringing in a lot of business to that area and they were out there promoting it.
I live in Plano which is in Collin county. Collin county is typically conservative. Even though it was left up o businesses if they want to close, most have closed. It is called freedom to choose. I hope Collin county does not cave in to pressure from the leftist leaning Dallas county and require something that should be our right to choose for ourselves. That bit about people coming into Collin county to shop is pure leftist propaganda(crappola).

The number 4 item on the list is why I made the post a few days ago saying that New York brought their issues on themselves. The woke culture of New York turns out to be a disaster. Good on them. Now we just need to keep them from bringing it to the great state of Texas. Time to close down our borders!

At least you have hair Sir :woohoo

Side note, pm on the way for AC check if you’re available.
That is part of the problem. I have bunches of hair all around the sides of my head but am severely thinning on top. I look like a darned fool. I am about to try a DIY hair cut. I bought clippers a few years ago but after butchering my own hair have not tried it again.

Re: Need help with “Essential Businesses”

I have a serious problem with the whole darned thing. I think it is fine for the government to step in and recommend such things. The government MANDATING these things makes me madder than a wet hen. We are suppose to be a free country with the right to make our own decisions on where we can go. This whole situation is far more ominous than I think many folks realize. What will be the next excuse to trample Americans rights? Where will the line be drawn? Many states are using this as an excuse to trample the second amendment. When is our turn in the barrel?

We're down to Flowbee's: :anamatedbanana
The dear wife has been urging me to keep my hair shorter for summer. She doesn't like it long anyway. Says it makes me look like I'm trying to pretend to be younger. Being Day 1 of Harris County's stay-at-home order and all (and Day 55 of the Coronapocalypse counting from Jan 30 when the WHO declared a public health emergency), she sat me down this morning and grabbed the clippers and scissors. Not a bur or a crew, but I'm now sporting a high-and-tight with a little length left on top. I think my ears look like open taxicab doors. But it definitely is cooler. ;-)

:iagree:
I thought the same thing
I understand it 100%. Churches involve large amounts of people all sitting close to each other, in one space, at the same time. The liquor store involves a few people at a time maintaining space between each other. They are there a couple minutes, then they leave. It makes complete sense if you are attempting to keep folks separate as much as possible.

I think the term that is bothersome is calling a liquor store essential. But I do understand that a church gathering carries more risk than a liquor store.

Liberty wrote: Tue Mar 24, 2020 4:18 pm I find it strange that Houston Galveston and New York refuse to shut down public transit systems. People crammed into tin cans coughing and sneezing all the while moving them across town. How is this safer than eating at your favorite restaurant? Leftist hate automobiles but love taxpayer funded trains and busses.
Speaking of eating out. How is eating food prepared by others not risky. That is riskier than anything I can think of. All one has to do is take one look at any kitchen in any restaurant and you will see a dozen or more people running all over the place putting hands on the food. They sweat all over everything due to the heat. Then they touch everything as they put it in containers that they put their hands all over.
