Re: Portable Generators

If anyone in the Houston area is looking to buy a portable gen, PM me. I've got a dual fuel Cummins/Onan (gas and propane) I need to sell. I just installed a whole house standby gen so I no longer need it.

Whole house generator at a fraction of the cost.
12kw is NOT a whole house generator, unless you have a gas furnace, gas water heater, gas stove, gas dryer.... and in summer, with two AC units, you would need all of that just to run those alone....
It would be close for me, I'm all gas with a small, one story house with one ac unit. But, when I got my whole house nat has gen estimates I was looking for at least 16kw.

I've seen where the natural gas company has offered that in the past.

Re: Portable Generators

This one looks promising, I need to find out if Texas New Mexico Power will allow them: https://www.homedepot.com/p/GenerLink-4 ... /301962200

I got two quotes last year for a whole house propane gen and they were both at 12k installed. If you can get it for 7k that's a bargain.
Until I checked the other day, I was under the impression (from previous searches) a whole house generator would cost $10k. Have prices come down, or what?
If they have let me know, I checked when they were not particularly busy and checked with two different places (I actually requested quotes from two more local places but they did not answer me until several weeks later so I ignored them). I really never expected that much, I thought maybe $3500 for the gen and another 3k to install. Boy I was way off.

Re: Portable Generators

I had a cheaper generator that worked fine but the parts became impossible to find anymore. I actually planned on buying a whole house generator last summer, got quotes and all. I just did not expect the cost to be 12 grand for a 1500 foot square house - that was way too much so I dropped that idea. I ended up buying a quality generator that is dual fuel, I like propane due to not having to worry about the carb being gummed up from gas sitting in it. But, I can also swap over to gas when I run out of propane. I ended up with Cummins due to the rep (Cummins/Onan are well known gen manufactures). This model has electric start with remote, built in power conditioner and can be wired into a panel which will cut start the generator with a power loss. This year I am going to get the transfer switch installed with selected circuits for things I will need in the future. I will also get the 100 pound propane tank I bought filled so I will have 140 pounds of propane on hand.
