My answer: Shoot-back! and he was like   he added we have to talk :woohoo
So what is your answer?
I don't have enough information to answer.
I don't know what the question has to do with the topic of the thread.

1. I would never let someone get close enough to grab my hand. Doing so would put you in much more danger. A BG on average can cover 20 ft in the time it takes a person to draw a weapon and fire. Do you honestly think you will have time to do the same once a person has a hand on you?
OK. Elevators and stairwells are off limits. What else?
You took my post out of context - if you go back and put it in context you will see that there were no elevators or stairwells in the conversation. Please try to keep up.

Just put him on ignore JMRA. He won't stop. I had to silence him a couple years back. He shows up once in a while, swarms a few posts with wise cracks and disappears again.
Thanks. I'll do that and hope the disappearing act happens sooner than later.

Most comments made above are about what is percieved an actual attack, ie "BG". But in my mind he is not a bad guy "legally" until i either, see a weapon, experience aggresion either facial expressions or with his movements, or am physically attacked.
Just a few examples but my point is that just because someone comes up to you for whatever reason, they MIGHT not be a BG but say a deaf panhandler wanting to hand you a little card that says "I AM DEAF", then looking for a handout. By you saying backoff etc may not have been understood and then you assume the wrong intentions and bang, because he did not "back off" and you are going to jail.
I feel that, if approached in anyway other than being charged i would put up my left hand in a universal signal to stop, yell loud STOP with my body turned that my right hand is gripping my sidearm, but still holstered. If that person still approaches i feel that they would almost have to grab my left hand for me to then pull and discharge. Of course their demaner would play a BIG part in the scenario of course.
just my 02 of course.
Thoughts?

2. Drawing your firearm does not mean you must pull the trigger. The law allows you to draw your firearm when "force" is justified. You can only legally pull the trigger when "deadly force" is justified. If someone continues to advance after multiple verbal and physical warnings to stop and you believe you are in physical danger then use of force is justified. If the sight of a drawn weapon does not stop their advance...

It doesn't matter if the crack head does get your words -- you want him to but you give it your best effort.

All this is for HIM, FOR YOU, and FOR WITNESSES.

And if he ISN"T a crack head but someone who is only a littler altered and understands your meaning through the fog then that is a GOOD THING.

We practice this. We know pretty much how it will go down, whether you practice it or not.

Not practicing it is like expecting to hit what you aim at without proper technique or practice.

I have watched too many beginners get tongue tied at just a LITTLE PRESSURE from the "bad guy".

Come try it. If you are great at it you will know and if not you will know to practice.
I will respectfully disagree. It is really not complicated at all. Get the heck away from me works just fine. As does any other words telling a person to back off. Saying it with the conviction and tonality that says you aren't kidding is the key. You can say please and if the tone of your voice is forceful, they get the message. I am talking from my personal experience, not some book I read. There is nothing magic about it at all. What causes most folks to get into trouble is allowing a person to get to close before saying anything. The trick is to not feel bad for telling a person to get away from you. That is the hard part for some. Fear of being rude is another problem for some.
:iagree: Bold and clear instruction to back off or else.

Fixed it for you. Use of "force" does not result in a "bang".

I would not ask "what do you want?" To me, that is almost a kind of an invite to stay and explain. If I think the person is up to no good, I want "back off" to mean turn around and leave while you still can. That's just me though.

YMMV.
:iagree: good advice.

I don't recall the CH class discussing this and have not asked my instructor about this topic. I have not found anything on my lady gun sites.

Do you yell "Freeze!" Or "Stop or I'll shoot!" Or not say anything because you are already shooting, depending on the situation. :confused5
Why was the gun pulled? If the gun was pulled because "force" was justified, I'm starting a conversation with instructions for the individual down range of the barrel. If the gun was pulled because "deadly force" was justified, there is no time or need for words.
" I may also move away from him to create distance. I'm also yelling for any bystanders to call 911." Gotcha. So either I am firing my weapon or I am moving myself to a better advantage. No words necessary. Unless I'm trying to control the situation before it escalates, as in he is approaching and I'm telling him to "Back Off! What do you want?" kind of thing.
Yep. I would probably tell someone (in a "force" only situation) once to back off before pulling my weapon. If they continued to advance I would not hesitate to draw.

Ok, this is what I was wondering, but you worded it better. ;-) It was late when I posted this last night. Lol.

Thank you all for helping me, I'm just trying to follow through on the draw in a "force" was justified scenario.
**Ok, so what are you telling the BG? What is the best way to deal with a compliant BG and how do you disarm him/her safely without getting close to them?

Wild Bill, that's hilarious! And yes, in that situation no time for talking. Lol.
Again, it depends on what the BG is doing that justified "force". Chances are once you pull a gun in a situation where deadly force is not yet justified, you will very quickly be looking at the persons hind side moving away from you. In this case I'm getting the best description I can and calling 911. I don't see a need to say anything to him.
If he doesn't run, I'm telling him to keep his distance and keep his hands where I can see them (not asking him to drop a weapon because there shouldn't be one otherwise deadly force would be justified). I may also move away from him to create distance. I'm also yelling for any bystanders to call 911.
I'm not interested in detaining or disarming a BG. I am only interested in protecting myself and innocents around me. If the BG has a weapon, deadly force should be justified so disarming is achieved by sending lead down range. Detaining is a LEO function, not a CHL function.
