Re: One song that "speaks" to you

Listening to Canon in D got me in a sentimental mood:

Here's a group of songs that I listened to growing up (my parents always had music going on the house and car....I still do now that I have my own house). I liked the songs as a kid. Now that I'm a little older and understand the meaning behind the songs, I like them even more.

At least now I can afford to crank it up on some nice gear.
Nice media set up!

For another one I like a lot: As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I played Trumpet through Jr High and High school.

My ensemble group played Canadian Brass's arrangement of Pachabel's Canon in D one year. I know a lot of people have used the song for various important events. I love it for a different reason. There was another kid in my grade who played Trumpet. He was a phenomenal natural musician. He was always first chair, and I was always second. We both ran cross country together and were into old cars so we were great friends...but he was always the better Trumpet player, so he always got the solos, etc.

This arrangement, much like the original, gives the 2nd string violin (or trumpet in my case) a LOT of great stuff to play. It wasn't written like most arrangements geared towards Jr high or high school ensembles where 2nd string gets lousy, boring parts....so I had a ton of fun playing it, even as 2nd trumpet.

And if I'm going to bring that video up, I have to share a funny cellist rant on Pachabel. Every time I hear this guy's rant on Canon in D I crack up. It also makes the Tuba players actions in the previous video make a lot more sense if you're a musician. :smilelol5:

Absolutely. I love most of the stuff they do. Don't know if you caught their remix on Breaking Bad, but here it is: best listened to with headphones cranked to 11.

If I ever get to San Antone, I need to give you a call. I think we'd get along. :coolgleamA:

In western literature, water is often a euphemism for death. When I first hear this song, I though she was singing to a dead lover. Other member on the Celtic Woman forum say the words are literal. That in Irish history many young men left never to return because of the famine. They often left family and lovers they would never see again.

"Don't look back when you reach the new shore. Don't forget what your leaving me for."

I'm not sure which theme is more sad or touching.
:iagree: But, what a great voice!
Another great folk song about the Irish leaving due to the famine:

My own family ancestry is pretty much pure German, but my wife has a VERY strong Irish heritage. Her name is Shannon for a reason, if that gives you any hints as to how Irish her family is.

This song always makes me emotional. The idea of having to leave your family land to foreigners while you flee across the sea is heartbreaking.

Re: One song that "speaks" to you

I doubt many of you will like this stuff, but I enjoy it, so there ya go....

I have several really good friends from my hometown. Now that we're scattered all over the country, the only way we really stay in touch is playing computer games together and chatting over teamspeak while we do so (a VOIP service). One of the main games we play is StarCraft 2. Dubstep is great music to listen to while you game. It fits into the game, doesn't distract me, and flows well.

Two of my favorite "dubstep" style songs.

First one is a dubstep remix of the video game music from the NES game "Bionic Commando".

Second is my favorite song from the genre, "Timestretch" by Bassnectar

Its not for everyone....but I like it. :cheers2:

Layla by Eric Clapton has stayed with me my whole life. Other songs have come and gone, but this one has stayed. Not sure why. Maybe because it is about the blues. Clapton was in love with his best friend's wife, Patti Boyd. His best friend was George Harrison of the Beatles. So he could only pine about the love he would never have. Patti ended up marrying Eric years later. Patti has the distinction of having three famous rock songs written about her. George Harrison's "Something" who Frank Sinatra felt was the greatest love song ever written, "Layla" and "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton.
Thanks for this, I never knew that about the song. :tiphat: I like a lot of Claptons stuff, but Layla and Wonderful Tonight are high up there on the list of great songs.

For another song that always "gets me" (darn, I guess I'm just an emotional sort of fella :biggrinjester: ) I'm going to have to reach WAY back in time.

My paternal grandfather was one of the finest men I've ever known, and I've known some great men. He survived the dust bowl in the panhandle, was the first member of my family to attend Texas A&M (which has now become a family tradition), was the first family member to graduate from college, survived polio (even had to be in an iron lung for a while), survived a tractor tipping over on him and breaking his back, only retired when his doctor made him because his back was so bad, and farmed in the same county for almost 60 years.

A random stranger who had season tickets next to him at Kyle Field had this to say about him to my dad on another forum after he learned that he passed away:
I had the pleasure of sitting to your Dad's right since 1991 and I remember your mother well. I recognized your Dad from your pictures right away. Your Dad was a wonderful man and we miss him, even though we only met during a game or two per season..

Your Dad and I would share our concerns about how the game was playing out, but I always knew that things were serious when he started humming Aggie Band music. I would cuss my head off, bellow at Slocum from the second deck, but he was in this Zen-meets-Panhandle-Farmer peace and I remain jealous to this day.

The last time I saw your Dad was at a night game in 2009. I remember because it was the first time I brought my daughter to a game. Your Dad made it a point to tell my daughter that he remembered when I brought her mother to games when I was trying to convince her to marry me.

Everyone in our section missed your parents in the 2010 season -- we beat Tech! We were all afraid age had caught up last season when unfamiliar people took their seats. Please tell your mother that the large man who sat next to them grieves for your loss and wishes her the best as do about a dozen good Aggies who sat around them.

I got to spend an afternoon a year with your parents for almost twenty years and I am a better person for it.
The last sentence really sums up my grandfather. He was a very religious, loving man who was patient, kind and gave generously to both family and absolute strangers. There is not a single day that goes by that I don't miss him and I am a far better man for having known him. He will remain the paramount ideal of how to live life well for as long as I am alive. If I die having been half the man he was, I will have lived a very good life.

My dad's response to the guy:
Again, thanks for your very kind words. I hope you won't think it's bragging for me to say I'm not surprised he was a positive influence on you, because I know he was for many, many people. He was a loyal Aggie for 65 years, a loving husband for 64 years, a deacon in his church for 51 years, and an amazing father, grandfather and great-grandfather. We should all aspire to do as well.

All that rambling to say that when I was on the farm with him, he was always singing (but not well. Alas, the inability to sing worth a darn was passed on to my father and myself as well). He sang a lot of gospel music, but his favorite song to sing a few lines from was "Hey, Good lookin" by Hank Williams Sr. Every single time I hear the song I think of my grandfather. I miss him every day.

I love 90's music.

I already posted two 90's song: The Freshman by The Verve Pipe and Scar Tissue by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

To keep up with that 90s theme, how about some Alice in Chains?

I like this song because of the story behind it. This song was written by Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell for his father Jerry Cantrell Sr., who went by the nickname "Rooster" while serving with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His dad was an M60 gunner with the 101st who served 2 tours in Vietnam.

Anyway, here's Rooster by Alice in Chains. I think its a pretty powerful, emotional song.

Re: One song that "speaks" to you

Another fun one is Lateralus by Tool.

Sometimes fans overthink things, but it is pretty cool how the lyrics to Lateralus tie into the Fibonacci sequence. You can even reorder the album using the Fibonacci (complicated and crazy explanations for how to do this can be found online "rlol" ) and the songs flow together in a smoother fashion when they're played in this order: 6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10

Here's a video to the song Lateralus explaining a bit about the Fibonacci and how its tied into the song and the album as a whole.

Even if you're not a modern music/rock fan try to make it through a minute or two before you give up on it.

It means something to me because its a good way to live life (Always expanding, seeking, learning) and just a really cool little "hidden" thing to be in an album. Plus I actually like most of Tools stuff. :cheers2:

Anyway, enough rambling, check out the video:

There is a picture of me in the 1967 or 1968 Cactus yearbook holding the original manuscript from the Texas Ex-Students safe. I was in the Longhorn Band while in college and still play in the Alumni Band whenever possible.
What instrument? My dad was a trumpet player in the Aggie band '74-'77. I played through high school but was on to bass guitar and through with brass by college. Thanks to a realignment, we went to state marching competition 3 years, and traveled a bit during the off year so I got burned out by my senior year.

Since its a song thread, I love a lot of the stuff the Aggie band plays, but a song most everyone else might recognize as well is "The Ballad of the Green Berets".

Expensive hobbies run in packs don't they?
One of my car buddies said a long time ago:

"Cars and guns.....all I need is a cocaine habit and I'd have 3 of the most expensive hobbies a man can have!"

Of course, several folks have pointed out that planes and boats are even more expensive since then, but I still think he has a point. :biggrinjester:

Re: One song that "speaks" to you

Alright, since everyone else has posted multiples I guess I'll jump in too. "rlol"

Hard to pick just one from these bands.....when I was growing up, any time we did house work or anything my parents would hook up their massive waist high speakers and blast music from Chicago, Boston, Journey, the Eagles......so that's my childhood memory music.

Love them all, but Chicago holds a special place with me. It's probably my Dad's favorite band, and since we both played trumpet, we both really enjoy the brass section stuff in their music. I chose this song in particular because my mom always told me it reminded her of her college days. Since I thought the song was about drugs "Should I try to do some more" etc, this confused me. When I told her that, she laughed and said it was about her late nights studying. She was in a major that started well over 100 people, and graduated less than 15. For her, it was about staying up late studying, not drugs. Ooppss.

25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago:

Since I've shared a couple of songs that remind me of family, I guess I can do a couple that are just important to me.

Red Hot Chili Peppers got me into playing Bass guitar. I had never heard bass played almost as a counter melody before instead of just rhythm, and I loved it. All their stuff is good, but the first song I really noticed the bass line as a vitally important and unique part of the song as opposed to just "background" was this one:

Scar Tissue by RHCP:

Another one that always hits me emotionally is "The Freshman" by The Verve Pipe. Its a fairly depressing song about the singer's girlfriend and the choices they made, but my own interpretation is more about the innocence of youth and the tragedy of young lives cut short. It always reminds me of friends that I've lost to car crashes, Iraq/Afghanistan, cancer, etc that all died too young. Very bittersweet song, but I love it anyway.

One song that "speaks" to you

Thought this might be a fun off topic thread....

What song hits you every time you hear it and provokes an emotional response from you?

For mine, you might need a little background. My family is a farming family. I had relatives go through the Depression/Dust Bowl era in the Panhandle, and heard a lot of their stories growing up. I also spent my childhood working on my fathers or grandfathers farms, so everything about this song speaks to some experience I have or family story I have heard.

The lines that really get me:
Our parents had their hard times fifty years ago
When they stood out in these empty fields in dust as deep as snow

And all this trouble in our fields
If this rain can fall, these wounds can heal
They'll never take our native soil
This is one of those songs that reminds me of how hard my great grandparents, grandparents and parents worked to make it. It reminds me that no obstacle I face can really compare to the conditions they dealt with growing up and the incredible faith and patience it takes to farm for a living. It's a very bittersweet song for me, but one that I always love hearing.

So what song really speaks to y'all?

Edit: Took me a minute to figure out the youtube embedding. Got it fixed now.
