Re: One song that "speaks" to you

Just saw this on Facebook. I didn't know Glen Campbell recorded this song by Jimmy Webb. Ironic that one of Campbell's last recordings would be of a Webb composition given their long standing association. Funnily, the first time Webb and Campbell met Glenn said "Get a haircut!"
Adios, Glen

I think this song spoke to many people and Ted Nugent makes a statement for all of us in his tribute. I ad my own thanks to the late, great Chuck Berry by posting this.

I always liked this song, and a girl who said it was her favorite, but that's not for publication. :thumbs2:

It's amazing that a garage band mastered harmony so well. This scene is from a movie shot in Florida not far from the band's location, if I recall correctly. That's another unique aspect to Mercy, i.e. a garage band being asked to sing in a movie, even a B movie. I tried to confirm or refute the statements made in the quote below and it does appear that "Love Can Make You Happy" hit three different charts many years apart. Obviously, everything clicked in this song for this one hit wonder band. Too bad they didn't do much more.

Chas.
What a beautiful song, and the greatest One Hit Wonder ! This song sold millions, and hit number 2 in 1969, James Marvell ( from Mercy ) and The Cavaliers do a country version of " Love Can Make You Happy " in 1981 that goes to number 1 on the country charts, believe it or not James Marvell does yet another Christian version of " Love Can Make You Happy " in 2008 that goes to number 1 on the Christian charts, making this the only One Hit Wonder to hit the charts 3 times.
I remember the tune well. I noticed what looked like cans of Falstaff beer being served but even better when I clicked on the YouTube icon to watch on full screen there's an NRA ad on the video.

Re: One song that "speaks" to you

I thought this song by Randy Brown inspired by the Richard Drew photograph was appropriate for this day. It was shared on Face Book by Wrecks Bell of The Old Quarter in Galveston. I had never heard it until today.

Thanks Wild Bill. I recently learned that Jim Stafford was in a band with Gram Parsons in high school.

What song hits you every time you hear it and provokes an emotional response from you?

For mine, you might need a little background. My family is a farming family. I had relatives go through the Depression/Dust Bowl era in the Panhandle, and heard a lot of their stories growing up. I also spent my childhood working on my fathers or grandfathers farms, so everything about this song speaks to some experience I have or family story I have heard.

The lines that really get me:
Our parents had their hard times fifty years ago
When they stood out in these empty fields in dust as deep as snow

And all this trouble in our fields
If this rain can fall, these wounds can heal
They'll never take our native soil
This is one of those songs that reminds me of how hard my great grandparents, grandparents and parents worked to make it. It reminds me that no obstacle I face can really compare to the conditions they dealt with growing up and the incredible faith and patience it takes to farm for a living. It's a very bittersweet song for me, but one that I always love hearing.

So what song really speaks to y'all?

Edit: Took me a minute to figure out the youtube embedding. Got it fixed now.
Just saw your post and recognized Nanci Griffith in the video shot. I like just about anything she does. We used to go see her at Anderson Fair and a few of the old Houston venues that had a lot of great singer/songwriters. I hail all the way back to Sand Mountain, The Jester, la Maison de Cafe, Old Quarter, Liberty Hall, etc. (the Old Quarter has been revived in Galveston). I have a lot of music and songs that I relate to in some manner, but "My Father's Fiddle" by Dave Loggins always gets to me. Reminds me of my grandmother taking me to gospel singing at various places and hearing her stories of the get togethers like those in the song as she grew up in the country.
