Mr. xxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx

Dear Mr. xxxxxxxxxx:

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 1865. As your representative in Washington, I appreciate your opinions. Introduced by Representative Bob Gibbs (R-OH), H.R. 1865 would guarantee the right of citizens to bear arms at water resources development projects administered by the Secretary of the Army.

Currently, this bill has been referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Although I do not serve on this committee, I will keep your thoughts in mind as this legislation comes before the House. Again, thank you for contacting me; I appreciate hearing your opinion on this issue.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to call, write, or email me. Re: ACOE land and federal HR 1865

Thought I'd update the Status of the bill (I just faxed 4 US Reps using 2 e-mail addresses on FaxZero, asking them to co-sponsor it)

I hadn't seen this listed before so:

H.R.1865
Latest Title: Recreational Lands Self-Defense Act of 2011
Sponsor: Rep Gibbs, Bob [OH-18] (introduced 5/12/2011) Cosponsors (38)
Latest Major Action: 5/13/2011 Referred to House subcommittee.
Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment.

Below is the official Gov site
http://transportation.house.gov/subcomm ... water.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Note that Bob Gibbs is the chair, and that the committee is over the civil works programs of the ACOE

Below is how to contact the committee...Handy "unofficial" site
(can copy-paste fax numbers/names into FaxZero etc)
http://www.contactingthecongress.org/cg ... &plusfour=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Lots of info above

So, the bill has a chance of passing if everyone will get their US Rep to co-sponsor it.
Over 2,500 recreation areas at 450+ lakes, millions of acres ... is a big score.

If you have NON-CHL freinds, who carry in their car, or will carry in their boat/canoe/kayak ... this affects them too ... get them to call/fax/e-mail too if they want to use those recreation areas or park in "their" parking lots, take the kids/girlfriend(s) /boyfriend(s)camping... or get tourism dollars into Texas.

bigred90gt wrote:One reason I ask about Cedar Bayou is that right now, there is a big stink going on on the Bayou with one of the more prominent families in the area. In the late 80's early 90's, they applied to the COE for a "boat slip" permit, and were granted the permit. Time was running out on the permit, and they were trying to renew it, with the intention of opening up a barge terminal on the bayou, basically across the bayou from one of the city parks, where a lot of people fish, ski, run PWC's, etc. Being that they are applying to the COE for their permit, I figured it might be a COE waterway, and me carrying my handgun could cause problems. As for the lakes, I was not able to find Lake Conroe or Lake Houston, but I believe I have read on this site that Conroe IS a COE lake. I will keep digging through your links.
most lakes, you can use this link and type in the lake name at the end

The COE has a bit of "say-so" on all lakes as to building docks/piers, draining it to dredge etc ... but the "controlling authority" is what you look at.

ACOE mostly "controls" lakes/ reservoirs, but also some land/water upstream/downstream from "their" lakes/reservoirs too ... but they dunno the exact boundaries. :banghead:

I will look at the referenced sites, but in the mean time, I will follow your first instructions. I'm looking specifically at Cedar Bayou in Baytown, TX, Lake Houston, Lake Conroe for lakes. I dont believe bay's would be ACOE waterways, but in the interest of being sure, Trinity Bay, burnett Bay, Crystal Bay, Scott Bay, Black Duck Bay, and Tabbs Bay.

For reference, I'm in Baytown, TX. Where about in central TX are you located?
Near Highland Lakes/ Burnet/Marble Falls ... 11-18 miles from LCRA lakes ... where concealed carry is legal :mrgreen: but only 20- 30 miles from forbidden waters I'd like to kayak/fish :mad5

Moved here from Pasadena ... your coastal National Wildlife areas are fine for CHLs; very little "Galveston" area see http://www.swg.usace.army.mil/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; click Recreation in left column for that area

Basically 3 ways ... 1) ask me :mrgreen:

or
2) go to the TPAWD and see who is the controlling authority
Example:
Granger Lake
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fi ... s/granger/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Reservoir Controlling Authority

United States Army Corps of Engineers

3100 Granger Dam Road
Granger, Texas 76530-5067
(512) 859-2668

3) Also check the Corps lakes gateway to see places we are banned
http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visito ... m?state=TX" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
=======================================

Problems can arise say on Whitney Lake and similar locations where it's legal under State law ... but not under Federal ... :headscratch

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/find ... e_whitney/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

===============================================

By the way, what's your location? I could use a kayak fishing partner sometimes, as could my across the street neighbor.
I'm in Central TX, I usually try to not catch fish .... they get the kayak all slimy, then I have to buy another one (kidding ... it's an addictive FUN sport, like collecting guns) "rlol"

I e-mailed the 2 Senators, and Mike Conaway, my Representative, before going to Church; I'll e-mail other Reps later tonight. It isn't like we are asking them to work ... just to sign on to the Ohio Rep's resolution, which will greatly benefit Texas with thousands of new acres of recreational areas we can use which our Taxes already paid for, but we are currently banned... even though we pay taxes to stock fish and maintain the areas every year...

Re: ACOE land and federal HR 1865

By the way, if you have a friend who starts carrying in a boat because Texas HB 25 passes ... and they head to one of the above lakes .... you might want to tell/warn them)

Also, there are almost too many to count of smaller US ACOE "reservoirs" ponds/small lakes "soil conservation/water conservation reservoirs... all over Texas, not even listed on those maps, where people with guns can't go fishing right now.... probably as many or more of those than there are ponds/water hazards on all golf courses in Texas.

Re: ACOE land and federal HR 1865

I know some of you are thinking
This doesn't affect me, I'm interested in "Local" not Federal

But this is actually "more local" than National Parks/State Parks.

Just a few examples:

If you're in Houston
Addicks dam/Barker dam reservoirs and the Harris County Park there .... are on US ACOE land
(Some Galveston County areas too are USACOE http://www.swg.usace.army.mil/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

If you're near Waco
http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/waco/r ... vareas.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you're in Dallas/Fort Worth/Austin, or elsewhere in Texas ... etc
http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/cgi-bi ... Recreation" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

See here for other areas of Texas
here's the LAKE map, and that doesn't even include all "recreational/camping areas/COUNTY/CITY PARKS
http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visito ... m?state=TX" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To most Texans concerned about gas prices ... this is BIGGER / should be more important, than National Parks as it is more "local". I mean it affects some city/county parks too ...

PLUS, it affects travel to other States, so we could carry in other States on USACOE land if State reciprocity is there.. http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visitors/visitors.cfm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
