In a possibly futile attempt to drag my thread back into reality ...

These animal collectors, or hoarders as they are sometimes called, have no limit.

I have an interest in horses. The authorities have busted people who acquired over a hundred horses in some cases, which they could not feed or care for.

I've seen the same thing with cats and dogs.

That's right. You used to work at BSCTE or whatever it was called later. I used to drive by it on my way to work if I decided to take Route 53.

The meat-packing industry in Chicago is now dusty ancient history.

The two largest suburbs of Hong Kong are Vancouver, B.C., and Chicago, so you can see where this is going.

Chicago is also the second largest city in Poland, but nobody smuggles vodka or sausage.

Re: IL: Bizarre thefts of exotic birds and other animals

I read an article about international smuggling of animal "products," which includes everything from live small animals to purported tiger penises (mostly likely bogus). It's as bad as dope. I can't find the article online now.

Re: IL: Bizarre thefts of exotic birds and other animals

Thanks. I did not realize this was such an area of criminal activity.

We lived in Lemont, IL, from 1983 to 1995, BTW. That's the same area where these criminals were working, though Lemont used to be quite isolated before they built the modern bridge.

IL: Bizarre thefts of exotic birds and other animals

In the Chicago area this week four people were charged with the thefts of several exotic birds and Australian marsupials called sugar gliders (which I had never heard of). The birds can sell for up to $3,000 each.

Weird. It was like the James Gang of exotic bird thieves. People exhibit really bizarre and obsessive-compulsive behavior about animals, but usually as loners.

These were felony crimes. Welcome to Joliet state penitentiary. Spike will be your cellmate. Enjoy your stay.
