No Windows 8 here, it's absolutely terrible. Tried it for a few days, got extremely frustrated at things that used to just be simple, put Windows 7 back on.

I predict Windows 7 is going to be another XP - people hang on to it for dear life for 10+ years.

Re: Are there any Linux users on this board?

This was a year or so ago, and it was OpenOffice on Windows. I had auto-update on for them. Just ranting a little bit about the frustration involved with it, that's all :)

Re: Are there any Linux users on this board?

OpenOffice / LibreOffice really needs a makeover to get closer in functionality to the current MS Office offerings. It's fine for basic home users, but as you start getting into more advanced functionality, like even printing envelopes, it just breaks down. I had the fiance's family using it for a while and eventually just bought them a 3 license pack for Office 2010 for Christmas because they kept having so much trouble with things that "just work" in regular Office.

Re: Are there any Linux users on this board?

I'm a Redhat guy, and I need to be able to support him when he asks questions, so I stick to those flavors of releases :)

Re: Are there any Linux users on this board?

I tried it a few years ago and wasn't impressed.

My Uncle needed a youtube and email machine a while back - ended up putting Fedora 17 on it for him with the newest Gnome. Terrible GUI for actual power users, but for him it's great. 1 window at a time is perfect speed :) Outside of the standard application issues every once in a while, his machine is rock solid. An application called EasyLife made installing all the extra essentials (java, flash, etc) really easy.

Something that is terribly missing from the Linux desktop is a good remote support tool. Teamviewer is lacking for Linux and just barely works. Standard VNC is not a a good solution from both a security and usability standpoint - it's not easily routable by itself through typical home firewalls. I know that Gnome has a built-in remote support tool but I haven't had a chance to try it yet and from the looks of it it just sets up a VNC session for you. Linux needs a teamviewer-like program that isn't dog slow.

Re: Are there any Linux users on this board?

Linux is my job :)

Typically Redhat-flavored servers. I admin all the way from Redhat 7.3 (Valhalla, yes we still have some chugging along) to RHEL 6.4.
