Re: Arrests

Yeah, Jim PM'ed me about missing the wit. But, when you have arrested the same person twice in 24 hours, it kind of slips past you. Most people arrested are frequent fliers and once every two months is not nearly as bad as I have seen.

Re: My first LEO encounter after receiving my license

If one has never been in Utah, and has no plans to visit Utah, why apply for (and get) a Utah CHL? Are there states with which Utah enjoys reciprocity that don't grant same to Texas CHL holders? I can think of no other reason, but then again I'm not all that bright. There is also the possibility th...

Re: Parking lots & TPC 30.06

My HS football coach's brother got searched on his way to Padre because he had his CHL on him but not the gun. He didn't show the license, since he wasn't carrying, and when it came up on the TDL check the officer searched his vehicle (and I quote) "for the gun" . :mad5 Why don't we sue w...

Re: Arrests

I have to agree with 03LightningRocks and Newlife12176. If the 20 arrests had all occurred recently, I might be alarmed. I would hope it would be more cautious than alarmed though. But if they happened ten years ago and he told me he had turned over a new leaf and been good since then, I can accept ...

Re: Bellaire: another police shooting error

And I love the way the newspaper reports his training record like taking those classes on cultural diversity and racial profiling was something unusual. I honestly don't see anything but objective reporting there. The list of the officer's qualifications reads as if it came straight from the police...

Re: The Future of LEO Attitude Towards CHL Holders

We fight it and try our best to get new cops to develop hobbies and hang around with non-cops when off duty. How do you do this? There are several ways, some that are direct and some that are a little more subtle. During my academies, I teacha class on officer safety. I break the class down into th...

Re: Bellaire: another police shooting error

Thanks, Jim. This clears up quite a bit for me. I know now why he thought the car was stolen (dispatcher said so) and he actually did have back-up available. The family is claiming the victim did not know they were cops because the spotlight was pointed at them. But the fact that there was a spotlig...

Re: The Future of LEO Attitude Towards CHL Holders

I don't think you have anything to worry about. First, as pointed out, even if the CHL numebrs double, it is still not a really significant portion of the public. And that is without taking into account how many will actually meet the police. I think, if anything, the numbers of CHL's meeting the po...

Re: Still No Open-Carry Bill

I think the main problem is the goal of opencarry.org is unlicensed carry and they don't know how to draftbills, as Chalres has pointed out. I think, and have previously posted, that the way to go about getting all of Chapter 46 repealed is to take it in very small steps. We got into this mess in sm...

Re: Bellaire: another police shooting error

In Harris County, my guess is that you would be prosecuted into bankruptcy. I have to say this is a newspaper report, and we all know what that means. If, as reported, the officer ordered the citizens to the ground without announcing that he was a police officer, the citizens were morally and legal...

Re: Ban lifted on loaded guns in national parks

And if I sound cynical, please point out a counterexample - a case in which something was banned and went away, as opposed to generating burgeoning profits. Absinthe and Viox come to mind. Wel you asked. Absinthe did not go away. It was just very expensive and better hidden. It is also now legal in...

Re: Both eyes wide open ?

Well, it kind of depends on what I am shooting for. When practicing combat shooting, I almost always use both eyes open. When practicing for precision bulls eye shooting, I usually close my left eye (right handed and right eyed dominant). When training officers, I have used the eye patch trick to sh...

Re: Carjack Scenario

A criminal is not going to care if you have expensive heart medication and want to get to it before they steal your vehicle... Considering the number of times they take cars without letting parents get the little kids out, I have to agree that this is most probable. As a general rule, I always advi...

Re: Suggestions for air travel lock boxes?

You know, I have to admit I have always been puzzled by one TSA check. In the four or five times I have flown since 9-11, I have had my bags checked by TSA. I actually started declaring my weapon after they changed the rules to stop putting the big steal me signs on the outside. And I understand the...

Here's a discussion question: How can we civillians (that is, non-LEO) take his story and its subsequent analysis as referenced by the OP and apply it to plausible scenarios that might be encountered? This is really what we should be looking at. What lessons can be learned from this incident that c...
