Shooting range readies for opening

By Joe Chapman

Recent accomplishments and upcoming projects were among the highlights as city officials toured the local park system Tuesday.
Among the stops was the Amarillo Shooting Complex, set to open Oct. 1 after a Sept. 30 grand-opening ceremony.

The $1.1 million facility is west of the city landfill. It will be open to the public Thursdays through Sundays and available to police every day.

It has rooms for classes on gun safety and concealed weapons law. A license isn't necessary to use the facility.

"All you got to do is bring your gun and shoot," said Sgt. Michial Dunlap, range master. "That's what it's for."

Admission will be $10 for three hours.

The complex will sell ammunition but not guns.

It has 100-yard and 200-yard ranges as well as a pistol range.

There also is a steel range, but it's not for general use. Other than police, organized clubs will be allowed to rent the steel range on a limited basis.

The grand-opening ceremony for the Amarillo Shooting Complex is set for Sept. 30.

To get to the Amarillo Shooting Complex, go west on Interstate 40 to the Arnot Road exit, west on the access road to Hill Road, north on Hill and then west on Bezner.

Three police officers will supervise the range at all times, Dunlap said.

"Safety is our No. 1 goal. Nobody gets hurt," he said.

The grand opening will include a demonstration on door breaching by the Amarillo Police Department SWAT team. Guests will be given the opportunity to fire an automatic weapon. Mayor Debra McCartt is expected to fire the first shot."

There are actually about 18 ranges in and around Amarillo, most built/sponsered by private clubs but sell memberships. The ranges in Lubbock are thicker in numbers and better in quality than most of the AMA ranges.

...huh, I didn't know Amarill had a S.W.A.T. division...how 'bout that.
There's no "C" in "Makenzie"...

Amarillo has had SWAT guys at least since when I lived there back in 1976 ... They were rather low profile and tended to befriend mostly each other ...
