I guess the reasons for this are fairly simple. Even 25 years ago there were many more Indians and Pakistanis in the UK (more than a million) than Chinese (most of those from Hong Kong) who numbered a few hundred thousand.
I don't know why, but in the US the use of "Oriental" for Asians is frowned upon. For some reason it's not politically correct.

Yes I heard someone on TV over here, say something about that but without an explanation as to why.

Simple explanation as it puzzled me too. Oriental = Things, Asian = People. That's the current PC def.

Occidental = anything or anyone from the Western Hemisphere
