Anytime we eat out there is the chance somebody will mess with our food. My mother has always been bad about treating wait people harshly. Even when we were kids we would decide we were no longer hungry at times from our fear of what the staff might be doing to get even for the demanding woman.

I believe that it is greater than social media. I would point to the number of people who killed or attempted to kill in public situations who have been admirers of on of the Columbine killers and researched information about him. That started before social media was a "thing". While I agree that social media gives it a platform and the potato lady apparently used it to trumpet her act, I believe that this level of depravity exists on its own.

God gave mankind free will, and the Devil seeks always to harm us and turn us away from what is good and right. In our fallen world, where sensationalism trumps goodness, it is no wonder that there are some folks that behave wrongly, or that there are some who are indeed just wrong (evil).
