Attending a Public Committee Meeting - Texas House or Senate

#1

Post by matefrio »

Anyone know when I should register? I plan to drive from Houston, the bill doesn't come up till 10am do I need to leave tonight and sleep over or can I get there just before 9:30am and sign in at that time?

I know I can carry but can I carry in the building when the House and Senate are voting on the floors just not in the room right? If not how do I know when they'll be in session?

I've already filled out some new online forms.

Unless you have a particularly compelling/unique story, written testimony and position cards are the way to go. It rubs the legislators the wrong way when too many people show up and say exactly the same thing.

NEW: Easier witness registration! You can even make an "account" online beforehand, then register electronically on the day of the hearing (from a kiosk or other device connected to capitol system).

I did the online thing. Just don't know if I can show up at 9:30 and register or do I need to be there earlier?

* TO REGISTER OPPOSITION: Show up anytime after 8am, the Texas Capitol Extension, room E2.010. We expect the hearing to last past noon, but we don't know for sure when it'll end -- so it's better to get there on the early side. Ask the clerk for a witness card for each bill you want to take a position on.

* TO TESTIFY: Show up around 11am, if you can. We suggest bringing a snack, as the hearing may last for a few hours. It's okay if you're late.
