Procedure for New Member Registration

#1

Post by Charles L. Cotton » Fri Sep 20, 2019 8:09 pm

As most folks will recall, several weeks ago we were inundated with Russian porn spammers joining and posting their trash. Registration was shut down for a while, then it was set it to require Admin approval. The spammers kept at it, so a new procedure is now being used. Anyone wanting to join must follow this procedure:
  • 1. Request a registration code by sending an email to RegistrationCode@TexasCHLforum.com using the email address you want for your registration; and
    2. Include your real name; then
    3. Register using the registration code that will be emailed once your name and email address have been verified.
Temporary email addresses will not be accepted and trying to spoof one won't work. If your name and email address are not found with an advanced search, then the authorization code will not be sent. The code will change daily.

I realize some people may not want to give their name, but I have to keep the Russian filth from infecting the Forum again. I'm not happy about it either, because it will mean more work for me and this I don't need! If you know of someone wanting to join, please let them know about this new procedure.

Chas.

Was anyone's private information leaked at the time of the attack?

It wasn't that kind of issue. A porn spammer registered a bunch of times and then started posting porn links all over the place.

I was on here at the time of the incident but sometimes thats just a distraction from what their true intentions are.
I'm guessing they would of had a announcement of some kind if a "leak" had occurred.

Charles,

Have you considered putting your site behind cloudflare?

Texas3006 is, including the apps, and I use Cloudflare to hard block traffic from every country except IPs that belong to the US. It has literally cut out 99% of the trash traffic I used to get.

My site isn't meant for non-american visitors, no reason to even allow them to see it.

This. It's not terribly costly or time consuming to migrate to a provider that can do hard geographic traffic blocking with up to 99.9999% accuracy of both the location and any proxy they may try to use.

That's assuming the spam bots are originating from foreign IP addresses. There are plenty of compromised machines here in the US that are a part of spam or hacking botnets that blocking foreign IP addresses will not help.

That's correct of course. I can only state what I've experienced, and for me blocking everything non-US cut out all spamming and compromise attempts almost entirely, and has continued to for years.
