Anyone Ever Seen This On A S&W

Post by carlson1 »

I decided to do a trigger job on my S&W 325PD and I pulled the grips off and saw this. Has anyone ever seen this kind of shotty work from S&W? Would you contact S&W?

Looks like they failed to finish/polish the part of the frame under the grips... ??

With the crane screw missing, the cylinder never just fell out??

I think some are missing the story. I was stripping the revolver down for a trigger job. I removed the screws and HALFWAY through the process I took a photo. I have all of the screws to the gun the only screws missing are mine.

The gun is back together and shot like a champ today. I just don’t understand the finish not being completed.

I personally wouldn't be happy with that finish job. What if it gets water under the grips? There CANT be that much savings from not finishing the last 10% of frame. I don't know if I would contact for a replacement due to serialization but I would send a email to remind them the gun world watches crap like this and it would affect reputation.

I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't pointed out to me, but I'm a utilitarian. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. No offense intended.

If I am not mistaken, that is A S&W Scandium alloy frame. The metal is mostly aluminum with Scandium added to strengthen it.
Water will not bother it. The anodizing is just for looks and, since this part is covered by the grips, does not affect the gun in any way.
It would not bother me. For all I know, the fixture that holds it during anodization may cover the non-colored area.
Enjoy shooting your gun.

If it is truly anodizing, I can't see of a way to anodize 90% of the frame. Looks more like it was spray-painted with the grips installed.
I have owned at least half a dozen aluminum/Scandium S&Ws and never saw anything like this.
Perhaps it is not anodizing at all, but merely a Cera-Kote type finish?
In either case, yes, I would contact S&W and ask them to make it right. And I hope they will.

PS: "shoddy" as in shabby, not "shotty" as in shotgun... :)
