Well, to put it succinctly, the sound comes from waves.

Is that the phone? I think the phone is ringing. Someone get the phone. Someone at the door? Izzat the doorbell again? I hear the ice cream truck!
In my personal experience, it lasts much longer than a week. I did a similar stunt with a .357 mag when I was 19, and as I type this, I still hear the ringing in my right ear. I'm 40.....

Amen to that brother. I didn't need no stinking ear protection. I was stainless steel, bullet proof, and STOOOOPID! To me, the sound of silence is a persistent ringing.

357 Magnum round out of a Colt Python towards a possum sitting in a sapling about 6 feet off the ground, out my dads truck window. I think it scared us more than the possum because he didn't flinch at all. When we regained our senses the possum was still there looking at us with that weird possum grin.

To this day when I see a possum I can almost hear nothing instantly.
