Scope Height??

#1

Post by MikeStone »

Just set my first scope (Burris 4.5-14x42 on a Weatherby Vanguard S2 .270 win, Leupold DD bases and medium DD rings) and the objective bell just clears the barrel at the eye relief I set. I can slide dollar bill in between, but that's about it.

What would you consider to be minimal clearance?

Will the front scope cover fit? When you acquire a cheek weld, does the scope sit right in front of your eye?

If the answer to both of those is "yes", then most people would call that the perfect setup.

Don't have a cover yet, but the scope lines up nicely upon cheek weld.

Seems that the rear of the objective bell is what is closest to the barrel. There is more clearance on the muzzle end, so I think a cover will fit ok.

Thanks!

The scope didn't come with covers? :headscratch

That's a new one to me too. I understand the cheapo 3x9x40's that come with most rifles not having a cover, but not a quality scope. :headscratch

I had a gun shop that tried to sell me a scope and mount with a "dollar bill" clearance.
I didn't like it so I made them order some higher mounts.
They complained and didn't like it, but I insisted. IMO a "dollar bill clearance" is too small.
I was concerned that the scope would hit the barrel during recoil. Not a good thing.
They suggested putting in a shim. Again I refused.
The son of the owner made a snide remark "I guess you know more about it than I do".
I silently agreed and told him I wanted him to order a higher mount.
I came back a few days later and picked up my rifle and never returned to that store.
I would suggest a clearance of 1/16 - 1/4 inch. That's just my opinion. :tiphat:

I generally like my scopes as low as possible. Seems to be that's where my face likes them. I think it depends on the rifle, mounts, and scope. I have a .204 that the lens cover touches the barrel when it's installed. I'm not sure how far off the barrel it is but it's where it fits me and it only has a 40mm objective. It is more than the thickness of a dollar bill though and any rifle that has some recoil, I would think you want at least a 1/16th of space.
