It looks like you have three broad categories of responses to consider.

1. Unless you're Indian or live on the reservation, you should follow state laws regarding carrying. The relevant SCOTUS decision is Oliphant v. Suquamish Tribe, 435 US 191.

2. WRONG. The law doesn't matter. Cops do whatever they want and Indian cops hate non-Indians.

I certainly received a lot of different answers on the question, and some informative reading material.

Thank you for the responses. I don't plan our family's trip out west for another four years or so, but I tend to start my reading ahead of time so I will be prepared when I start having to map which roads to take and where to camp along the way.
