A co-worker of mine went to a North Dallas Wal-Mart yesterday and saw a row of metal detectors at the entrance?? She had heard about metal detectors being installed in Oklahoma locations but was surprised to see them here in TX. She even took a pic and they do look like metal detectors. Has anyone else heard of this? I asked her if they were just to catch anti-shoplifting devices and she was adamant they were metal detectors.

I’ve never even seen a 30.06 sign at Wal-Mart before. How are they going to handle a situation when a LTC holder walks through their metal detectors? With no 30.06 signs?

I’m really surprised so I thought I’d post here. See if anyone else has heard or seen anything about this.

I seriously doubt that they are metal detectors. My bet would be that they are RFID readers for asset tracking and inventory, or possibly a test for a new "scan and go" type system that allows customers to avoid waiting in line for a cashier.

Were Wal-Mart employees standing next to the machines? If they are metal detectors, they would be pretty useless unless an employee was there to stop folks when they went off.

It might be easier just to ask your co-worker if they went off when she walked through. Since she had her phone, that should have set off a metal detector.

That was my first thought as well.

I’m in with - scan and go.

You just walk out with what you want and it charges your credit card. Receipt would be on an app on your phone or something.

This would be to compete with Amazon threat of their new stores.

They don’t hardly even confront shoplifters ( legal now in Dallas) as it is. They are going to ask employees to confront armed shoppers and disarm them?

My thoughts exactly. Their biggest problem by far is shoplifting.

My wife cannot fly now (two artificial knees) without getting pulled out of line for an intrusive pat-down, regardless of what TSA says about their machines not being influenced by that metal. I cannot imagine how much fun it would be to have Wal-Mart employees trying to deal with anything similar.

After seeing this post I read something similar on another forum. No retailer is going to want to deal with the expense of hiring full time security at the machines, as well as putting their customers through the delay (and hassle) of having to empty pockets, get wanded if the machine still goes off, etc.

It MIGHT work for a low volume boutique type shop. Say a high end jewelry store or the like. But definitely would not make sense at a place like Wal Mart that might have hundreds of customers in the store at any one time.

My local Walmart recently did a refresh and added these gates at the entries, not sure what purpose they serve but maybe they are what is being mistaken for metal detectors?
