Hill Country Opening Weekend

#1

Post by UpTheIrons »

This is what I saw wandering past my stand near Doss early Sunday morning. He was about 90 yards out and on the move (well, a gentle lope) when I shot. And yes, that is a 50 year old Winchester Model 94 in .30-30 behind him. It does have a 'modified' stock to make the use of the side-mounted scope easier. He may not be that big by everyone else's standards (he scored B&C 97 3/8), but he was the biggest buck anyone has taken on our lease in at least 3 years, and the third biggest buck we've seen in the same time frame.

For what it's worth, I'm using Remington Core-Lokt Pointed Soft-Points in 150 grains. Maybe next year I'll try the 'new' Hornady LeveRevolution rounds, but these seem to do the trick. One shot, one kill.

I've hunted the Texas hill country many times and that, sir, is a fine hill country buck. Congratulations! :cheers2:

Thanks, gents!

I was very surprised when I walked up on him and saw no evidence of "ground shrinkage" as I have with some bucks in the past.

I may be missing something, but I am fairly good at judging deer and believe that buck will score at least 110-115. That is a nice 8 point! :thumbs2:

BTW I have been shooting LeverEvolution ammo in my 30-30's for a few years now, and some guns like it better than others. It is definitely worth trying though.

Thanks! I was pleased with him, too. I used the B&C online form, so I know I didn't do the math wrong, but I may very well have measured wrong. If I get motivated enough, I'll try it again once the skull is done - I'm doing a European mount with it.

I'll give the Hornady stuff a try in the off season and see what it can do in this old gun.

I think that would make a fine title for a "do it yourself" TV show, don't you?

And now, stay tuned for "This old Gun," brought to you by Sierra Bullets - The Bullet Smiths. Buy Sierra, for "un-MATCHed" quality!

Wow, now that is beautiful. I shoot with the leverevolution and it was spot on, in my marlin 30-30 lever.
