From 9 to 13.

7 to 6 liberals vs conservative justices.

I guess the ending the filibuster comes first. The ram it through with a slim majority.

You beat me to it. The bill ought to be named the "Kicking Off CW2" bill.

To be honest, I'm surprised that they are only wanting 4 extra. I was expecting an increase to 19 or 21 so that there would be a 2/3 majority on the court to show the liberal 'mandate' and ensure that one or two justices unexpectedly swinging on an issue wouldn't change the outcome.

They are really pushing it this morning in Congress.

Impassioned eloquent pleas.

It hasn’t even been a 100 days.

:iagree:

This will completely de-legitimize the role of SCOTUS as a constitutional check on the legislative and Executive branches since SCOTUS will become simply a tool for these other branches to use as they wish.

Without any independent validation on the legitimacy of the laws and Executive Actions promulgated by these other branches, those laws and EO's also lose legitimacy, and people will feel justified to just disregard any such laws / EO's that they feel are unconstitutional. There will no longer be any body that is trusted to assess the constitutionality of anything coming from the federal government. And there will be nothing preventing open and complete rebellion.

That would certainly be a requirement. However, I think there are a few democrats in the Senate who aren't likely to go along.
I could be wrong (it wouldn't be the first time) but while this is certainly a concern, right now I don't think it's a real possibility.
I'm staying tuned, though…

I got a text saying Pelosi stopped it.

May be wishful thinking.

Here is a news article that says that.

She did stop it and then talked about how it's certainly something to consider and been done before, yada yada yada... as if to be the voice of reason now and next month take the "recommendation" of the committee to expand it and say we waited for the recommendation to advance anything.

I believe it to be a complete scripted set up for the long game.

How many seats will the Democrats hold in the House and Senate when oil hits $100/bbl and the CNY is trading at 5 for a dollar? There is a triumphalist radicalism tempered by fear that has previously been reserved for communist revolts which seems to be permeating parts of the Democratic party. The parts that aren't on board...historical working class people who aren't socialists are getting pushed out or silenced. The willingness to change the rules of the game (adding states that are composed exclusively of Democrat voters and adding USSC justices when they think they can ram their picks through) is bad because 1) it offers the Republicans the exact same opportunities when they regain power (see above) and 2) the political divides that we're seeing are strongly geographic.

I hear no talk of compromise, only of "beating the other side". I generally like the motivations that Democrats espouse: not polluting, taking care of the poor, leaving people alone unless they're actually hurting someone else (I'm not sure that's still part of their platform)....those are good things. I'm just aware of all of the instances in which governments were empowered to attain those goals at the point of a sword.....and the untold tens of millions of deaths that resulted, largely among the people who were supposed to benefit. More and more, I believe that we need to change how we conduct primaries so that the crazies on both sides don't get to choose the slate of options for the rest of us. I would love to see EVERYTHING require a 2/3 vote to pass, which would require that people actually talk to one another. Instead I see people moving to consolidate power so that they never have to compromise ever again.

What I honestly do not understand is how the Democrats can honestly believe they will stay in power forever. It will change and hopefully the Republicans (or their replacement) will show the Democrats that they learned their lessons. The Democrats went to 13 because that is enough to get them a majority now. They feel the current balance is 6-3 and 4 more liberals would give them an unbeatable majority. I think it is 5-4 now because there is no way I can count Roberts as a conservative justice.

But if the Republicans take office, they won't add just two to get a majority back. They will add ten so they have a majority for a much longer time. And they will do a lot of other things like completely change the rules on getting bills passed, etc.

The Republicans have not done this when they were in power because they believe in fairness and not payback like that. But in the past 6 months, I would bet they have learned a few lessons.

One would think that the Democrats would have learned from the mistake of lowering judicial appointment approval to a mere majority. Look at what it allowed Trump and the Republicans to do at all levels of the federal judiciary in four short years time as well as at SCotUS. The Democrats paved the way, and the Republicans drove very quickly over that newly paved road.
