Last time I posted OT it was the USAF tweaking the bear's (and the Libyan's) nose with the SR-71. Navy's turn now.

Pretty good article on a US sub sniffing around the old Soviet Union right off-shore. Make sure you go through the related slide show. Among other things, you will see a sailor holding some polar bear medicine while the sub is surfaced through the ice.

A new book, “Unknown Waters,� recounts the 1970 voyage of a submarine, the Queenfish, on a pioneering dive beneath the ice pack to map the Siberian continental shelf. The United States did so as part of a clandestine effort to prepare for Arctic submarine operations and to win any military showdown with the Soviet Union.
