Principal Seeks Food Cans to Defend against School Intruders :thumbs2:

An eastern Alabama school principal is asking students to bring cans of food such as corn and peas as a way of fighting off a school intruder.

W.F. Burns Middle School Principal Priscella Holley said in a Friday letter to parents that a can could stun an intruder "or even knock him out" until police arrive.

Holley wrote that the cans would empower students if an intruder enters their classroom at the school in Valley, Alabama.

Chambers County Schools Superintendent Kelli Hodge told The Associated Press the letter was sent after school employees received training from Auburn University's public safety department.

Hodge says throwing cans or other items would be a last resort for students unable to evacuate. She says the cans would be stored in classrooms and students wouldn't be carrying them around school.

There are so many jokes here...I'll start!

Did the training they received from Auburn Univ. Police include any range time? How do we know these administrators, let alone the kids, are proficient with their cans?

As crazy as it sounds, it's better than nothing, but far from a first choice.

When the best choice is eliminated at the get go, you only get to pick from the poor leftovers.

Should they aim for the head or center body mass.

That's assuming it's a school district that still buys books! :grumble

Did they have to attend the Can Academy before the can?

This is just going to lead to an arm(s) race. Who can throw more cans quicker. Who can throw bigger cans. Then there will be those who want to carry more cans... Do we need a limit on the number of cans one person can carry?

This made me laugh at first, but to me it is better than teaching them to give up! They are giving them a chance to embrace a warrior mindset. Giving a glimpse of the idea that you are responsible for your own security.JMPHO

They don't have chairs they can throw or beat them with?

Can I send in a baton to keep in the classroom rather than some Campbell's chunky?

If they fill the cans with black powder and put a fuse in them, then maybe they're on to something.

Better not leave those cans unattended....they may hurt some of the children!
Would the larger 20oz can's be considered 'assault cans'?

(hey moderator, can we get a can-throwing smily face please? hahaha) :fire

Which cans have more stopping power?

Are all cans full metal jacket?

Is it better to carry 2 small cans or 1 large can?

On a serious note.... I choose to take some solace in the fact that "Self Defense" is peeking through into the action plan, albeit in a very small way.
Foreshadows a mindset change? Baby steps?
