These thieves will be dying of cancer or radiation poisoning soon.

Some DOE employees leave plutonium in the rental vehicle over night. What could go wrong?

The company will soon be submitting a report to the NRC. Texas is an agreement state. Here you can read other reports and how much goes on without the hyperbole of the media.

One of the most dangerous substances on earth left on the back seat of a rental car in a crime-ridden area; what could possibly go wrong.

No argument that this is BAD. But what terrible reporting to not be clear that the sample calibration disc quantity was way, way too small to make a bomb, and to fail to discuss the potential (big? Small?) for exposure ramifications should the perps manage to turn the stolen material into a dirty bomb....

This article was nearly useless, except for being another example of Murphys law.

In the San Antonio incident, the San Antonio police were dumbfounded that the experts from Idaho did not take more precautions. They "should have never left a sensitive instrument like this unattended in a vehicle," said Carlos Ortiz, spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department.

...San Antonio police statistics show that theft was just one of 87 at the Marriott hotel or its parking lot in 2016 and 2017.
Horrible to leave that stuff in the back seat of a vehicle in a high crime zone.

Odd that it hasn't been found yet.

Fortunately these guys are on the job:

The article did say they were on the way back to Idaho, which means they also had whatever it was they picked up. There was more radioactive material than the reference samples, one would assume, no thanks to the reporting.
