Austin proposes 25% property tax hike to fund 10 billion dollar mass transit program.

After the Covid dies down if it ever does, I expect a massive round of tax increases to make up for lost revenue and increased expenses due to Covid, let alone new ideas on the ways for govt to spend more money.

After HB2 last session, they will have to have voter approval for any increase over 3.5%

They'll just increase the appraised value of all properties to raise the money the government thinks it deserves. :banghead:
In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law to pursue a natural justice.

The value can increase, but the taxing entity is limited to 3.5% increased revenue (maintenance and operations) without voter approval, 2.5% for school districts. There are SOME exceptions, but alot of the taxing entities are not happy about having to ask voter permission to increase their revenue more than 3.5% in a year.

Edit: It is Senate Bill 2, not House Bill 2 as I originally posted. My apologies.

Austin city council cuts police budget by $150 million.

Well it will be an interesting experiment in Texas.

I guess next year we will know how it worked out.

roughly 34% of the department's $434 million total budget.
That's a big chunk! I was expecting somewhere closer to 5% or less. I wonder if they are accepting suggestions to what the new outgoing message on the 911 call system will be. :biggrinjester:

Wow, I hope they flag the neighborhoods that all the council members live in and stop responding there first. Followed immediately by city hall and all city offices.

Oracle moving to Austin.

So people deciding to move is one thing, Companies deciding is another.

The people who are transferred will bring their views with them.

I guess good news but???

CA hearing a sucking sound yet.

That's the way Ellis county did it. Tried to raise my valuation 85%. After the fight, they only raised it 50%.

:mad5

We'll be moving to rural Leon county as soon as I can get the house ready.

:woohoo

Man, what a freaking shame. I moved to Austin back in '71. Ben White was the south edge of town. Brodie Lane and 620 were little country roads through the forest you could get lost on. You could see the Capitol building from anywhere in the city limits. Oak Hill and Round Rock were "small towns near Austin," where people moved to "live out in the country." Well, don't get me started. It was a peaceful, kick-back kind of place. Look at it now.
