Austin's homeless problem makes the Drudge Report.
Are there more homeless people? Have there always been lots of homeless people but they were hidden in out of the way places?
Los Angeles throws money at the problem and it only gets worse.
A friend volunteered at a charity homeless shelter and found out that they all have smart phones.
In my area the homeless seem to have mental problems, is that typical?

Many times mental problems are at the core of why someone is homeless, particularly long term homeless. They can't keep it together long enough to work within the usual framework of job, pay bills, get along with people -- and for the same reasons can't stick with medical/psychological routines required to get better, like taking the correct medicines, going to therapy etc. They do self-medicate tho, just with the wrong stuff, like alcohol and various street drugs.
For the same reasons they won't and can't stay in the homeless shelters or the housing solutions that every big city Dem government wants to build -- they won't/can't obey the rules and get thrown out or they leave on their own because of the stress of the minimal conformity required. But because you cannot forcibly require someone to accept mental health treatment until they do something really seriously illegal, they just kind of float around in limbo, cycling through jail periodically for relatively minor league stuff, until they die or they do something so bad they go to prison for years.

I work with a charity that provides help and support for those that are marginalized, but want to change and seek help getting out of a bad spot. And that's the key - the individual has to want to change. Like ELB described, I've seen too many who cannot or will not change and you can't do anything to help those people.

100 tons of trash removed from Austin homeless camp.
Apparently they move the homeless camp right before SXSW.

Man armed with a rock and a knife threatens to kill 30 to 40 small children on a church playground in downtown Austin. Police used tasers on the man but they were ineffective as he was wearing at taser proof blanket. Police unfortunately had to get up close and personal with the suspect and tackle him.

Someone overcooked the bird?

I don't usually think of 'sculpture' as being made of something exothermic. Was the bird paper-mache?

The Grackel sculpture was made of recycled tires.
For public art it actually was pretty good. Ie actually looked like a Grackel, and seemed to have some craftsmanship.
A shame. But now more famous in death.

But grackels are such ugly, annoying birds. Their sound is extremely irritating; they eat the eggs and kill the young of songbirds, including the honorable Texas mockingbird. Perhaps whoever destroyed the statue thought they were doing a public service.
