Zeke had showed up at them working on the cabins . He was smiling and she asked ...Did you take Rosa and Nate hunting ? Zeke said ...Yep ! He just kept smiling tormenting her to ask the question he wanted her to asked . She said ...WELL ? Did she shoot the shotgun ? He said ...She shot three jackrabbits on her first trip hunting ! Now she wants to go quail hunting ! She was amazed and gave him a hug . Zeke also said ...I showed her how to skin and dress em . Her and Lucy are cooking em right now for lunch . She called out to everyone working about Rosa providing food for today ! Simon and his brothers thanked Zeke for teaching her .
Zeke fell in working truing boards she had planed to fit as Juan and Carlos laid them . Wade , Simon and Tomas raised and finish notched them on the walls . The bunkhouse floor was nearly done an the last logs were being fitted for all the walls . The cabins were coming together fast .
They broke for lunch an there was rabbit and dumplings with quick bread and sweet cinnamon bread with dried plums in it . Rosa told them all ...I made all of lunch with Lucy's help and I shot three of the rabbits for today ! They all bragged on her and told her to thank Zeke and Lucy for helping her . During lunch she was talking more than eating and she said ...I want to shoot a buffalo ! We could eat many days with a buffalo ! Everyone laughed and Wade told her ...You will have to talk to Ed when he returns ...he is the buffalo hunter here . She said ...I will ! Senor Ed will show me ! They all laughed and thanked her for lunch .

They made the stand of mesquite and hackberry trees late afternoon by keeping moving . They let the horses blow for an hour and Don said ...According to Wade it's about four miles from here to Eliasville . We are going to make it today ! We are nearly there ! They were all happy to finish the crossing and besides the miserable night in the rain it had been easy with no mishaps and Comanche . They took off south again to find the small stream then west to Eliasville ! They were all still in good spirits .

When the day was done all the walls were up on the three cabins ! Four of six support beams were in , the floor only needed a few hours more work for the bunkhouse cabin . The ridge beam was rough cut to length and needed be raised and set with bracing . There were enough boards to deck and more than enough shakes for the bunkhouse roof .
The Garcia's all bragged on her working with the boards . Carlos said she is killing us ! Between her and Zeke we have no excuse to stop working ! They spit out boards with fury ! Everyone laughed but Wade said … I am proud of her . I never thought I would have a wife that can do what she does ...Is there anything she could not do ? Everyone bragged on her and it embarrassed her , she turned red in the face . Zeke laughed and said ...She beat us all picking and husking corn ...It made us look bad ! She just got redder and said don't tease me you all did a good job . Wade smiled and asked ...Have any of you built a cabin with anyone as pretty as her ?
They all said no at the same time and she laid her face on her arms . They all said ...It's true you are pretty ! Wade laughed and held her saying ...You are pretty ! She told him ...You embarrass me so ! He kept laughing and said It's just the truth !

They all said it wasn't quite as good as beef or pork but still plenty good ! They had cornbread with it and Rosa had ground red chili's to add if you wanted . They ate it all !
They almost had it in the dry ! Doors still needed to be built and the interior wall between it and the next cabin . But they were more than satisfied with their efforts for the day ! They hoped to set beams and get started on the roof tomorrow .

Don , Steve and John got to the small stream but it was not a small stream now ! It was running full thirty yards wide with runoff from the storm . The water was fast and brown lapping at both banks . They sat their horses and looked at it . Steve finally said ...What do you think Don ?
Don thought on it and said ...We cross . We have dispatches to deliver ! We need to get things done in Eliasville and Fort Graham . I'll cross first upstream to make the landing on the other side here . The water is fast and we don't know how deep , don't hard tie your pack horses . Dally em so you can get loose of them if it gets bad !
Don went upstream forty yard or so and entered the water pulling two pack horses . They struggled to get across being swept downstream but made the landing on the other side . John then Steve followed , they all made it to the other side . They turned west and got to the Staley's store tying up in front still wet .
Don , Steve and John went in and Ed Staley said ...Haa Rangers ! How may we help you today ! Don said ...My name is Don Hale sir . We come from the Black Mule Ranch , Wade and all there speak very highly of you and your wife sir . I have supply orders for the ranch that we will be stopping and picking up on our way back there . I request that we might leave our pack horses here to not slow us down . We carry dispatches for Ranger headquarters in Fort Graham that need be delivered quickly .
Ed said ...It's only two hours till dark ! Stay with us till morning and leave at first light , We have a room with four beds and you can eat with us . As far as the pack horses we will certainly take care of them till you return . Wade ordered one hundred rolls of barbed wire and a cookstove . They are supposed to arrive tomorrow . If they get here before you have to leave would you pay a freighter to haul them to the ranch ? The only reason I ask is to help you if that is possible .
Don thought hard . He didn't expect this ! He had no authorization from her , Wade or Zeke to handle their business but Don knew they wanted the wire and stove and all the supplies . A prairie freight wagon could carry a lot ! He asked Ed how much it would cost to haul a load to the ranch . Ed didn't know but he said ...If you entrust me to make the deal I will get you out as reasonable as possible !

After supper Wade and her went outside and sat on the bench to talk . They talked of many things , Ed , the three young Rangers , the cabins , Rosa and Zeke hunting , the chili . They just talked . With all that was going on at the ranch it was hard to find time to just...talk . Wade asked ...How old are you ? I don't even know your age ! She said ...I'm twenty seven years old . Wade said … You look twenty ! You always get embarrassed when people say your pretty ..but you are ! She said ...I was taught not to be vain about looks , my parents said it was a sin . Wade said ...GOD made you pretty ! He gave you that gift ! It's only a sin if you use that gift to serve yourself and I would never expect you to do that .

Ed pulled up on the south side of a low saddle on the prairie in some rocks and staked his horse . He turned over enough rocks and found a two foot prairie rattler . He gutted and skinned it then built a small fire of dead brush wood that would not smoke . He propped it over the small fire on a stick waiting for it to get cooked enough to eat . The jerky was gone , he would have to scrounge for food , he couldn't be shooting a gun to hunt .
He was coughing a lot and had the chills . Sleeping and riding in the cold blowing rain had not been good . He ate most of the snake and covered up with his damp blanket trying to get some rest .

Ed hollered up to Don , Steve and John that supper was ready . They filed in the kitchen having cleaned up at the well some . Ed introduced them to his wife and they sat down to eat . She had made fried chicken , mashed potatoes with gravy , yeast bread and chocolate pudding ! Steve said out loud ...Fried chicken ! I forgot what it tastes like ! They all bragged on the food .
They sat and talked after the meal and Mrs Stalely wanted so bad to ask if Wade had proposed to her she was going crazy . But they finally got around to the story of Wade coming back and finding her beaten and it came out that he had proposed . She stood straight up at the table saying ...I have been going crazy wondering if he asked and if she accepted . It is done ! They will be married here ...You all must tell them to marry here ! Tell Wade her dress is ready , we actually made two dress's so she would have a choice ! She kept rambling on till Ed said ...Get a holt of yourself woman ! Your acting crazy ! She sat down and calmed down . She said ...Tell me about her .
They had never been asked to describe her before and thought . Steve said quickly ...She is one of the prettiest women I ever saw . Don and John agreed with Steve and John said ...She takes care of everyone but she is never bossy or the like , she is calm all the time . She came from Iowa , she has killed outlaws and fought Comanche . She is never afraid except for others , Don said ...She's nearly died three times in less than a year but you wouldn't know it , she brings out good in people and never complains . Being at the ranch with these people there has changed a lot of folks just being around her , Zeke and Wade . It's going to be amazing when Wade and her get married !
The Staley's were fascinated with the continued report of her and the ranch . Mrs Staley asked ...What of Lucy Burnet ? Is she well , is she coming back to Eliasville ? They all smiled and Don said ...We all like Lucy but she is ...different ! She is fine and loves being at the ranch , I think she wants to stay there . She seems kind of sweet on Ed Rawlins .
Ed nearly came out of his chair and said ...ED RAWLINS IS LIVING AT THE BLACK MULE RANCH ! Don said ...Well sure Ed's a blessing to everyone . He's the one that shot the two that beat her up . Ed just said ...Oh my Lord ! Ed Rawlins lives at the ranch ! This story is incredible ! Ed said ...And Lucy likes him ? Don said ...Oh yea ! She bad mouths him more than anyone else and likes to chew tobacco with him on the porch . The Staley's looked at each other trying to take all this in .

They had breakfast with the Staley's in the morning . Bacon , eggs , biscuits and gravy . Mrs Staley made them a bacon sandwich and bucket of tea for lunch . They saddled up in the early morning dark determined to get to Fort Graham in record time . They expressed much gratitude to the Staley's for taking care of them then headed east to Fort Graham at a lope by the light of the moon .
Don worried for Ed out there on the prairie . For a normal man the odds were stacked against him to return .

She awoke in the dark . She could hear Lucy softly crying . She rose and got a lucifer and lit the lamp as Lucy sat there with tears running down her face making the sleeves of her gown damp wiping them away . She sat and held Lucy . She said ...Talk to me Lucy , share your burden and pain . It's Ed isn't it ? You fear for him .
Lucy shook her head yes . She told Lucy ...Crying will not help Ed come back , GOD only can bring him back to us . Pray with me Lucy , GOD will hear us . He tells us that where two or three are gathered in his name he will be with them . There are two of us , lets pray for Ed to come home .
Claud said ..I am here ..there are three of us ! Ray spoke up from the pallet saying ...There are four of us now . Ma'am would you lead us in prayer for Ed ?
She held Lucy and said ;
Lord help Ed Rawlins your servant Lord . Protect him and sustain him in this trial , consider him Lord . Strengthen him and hold him up . Provide for him , give him shelter from those that would harm him . Hide him with your hand . Bring Ed Rawlins back to us because we all need him in our lives in different ways . Be with us too Lord and help us as we suffer , you have made Ed Rawlins part of us . Please bring him back safe to us . We ask in your name . Amen

Don , Steve and John reached the small stream on the way to Fort Graham in a couple of hours ! They were pushing their horses hard to deliver the dispatches to headquarters . They let their horses drink and cool down as the ate a really thick bacon sandwich and drank all the tea passing the bucket to one another .

They went back to work on the cabins right after breakfast . She was still using the plane and carrying shakes in preparation of roofing the bunkhouse . By lunch the floor was finished , supports up , roof beams in place and boards being laid to put up shakes . They didn't want to stop for lunch but did because Lucy would get mad if they didn't eat what her and Rosa had made for lunch .
They had buffalo and rice with fried potatoes and tea . They went straight back to work on the cabins . Rosa and Lucy cleaned up after lunch and came to help too . Claud was watching Ray and talking to him and Rosa ran and checked them every little bit .

Don ,Steve and John got to Ranger headquarters about noon , they made good time ! Don took all of the dispatches and paperwork with a copy of Wade's daily log to Captain Tom . Tom sat down pouring over everything and commented ...Captain Wade is very detailed in all these reports ..That is impressive !
Don gave a personal report about them following the Comanche and Ed sending them back . Don told him that Ed figured the Comanche were heading to the Palo Duro canyon to form a big camp there . Captain Tom asked Wade many questions about the ranch , the people there . He asked about Claud and Ray and confirmation of their stories .
At the end Captain Tom said ...Take back two horses and a saddle for Ray and Claud and if you think of anything needed tell me before you go back to the ranch . I go right now to dispatch telegrams to all Ranger commands about the Comanche gathering in West Texas or the Panhandle . The army will be informed as well . You should stay in the bunkhouse at least tonight . You , Steve and John pushed hard to bring this information ...You men did well !

Possible large gathering of Comanche in West Texas or Panhandle Stop ! Report any movement by Comanche west or from the Indian Territories both south or west Stop! Don got his backpay in cash at headquarters , it was quite a bit him being out so long . Steve and John had a month coming . They decided to stay at the Ranger bunkhouse , it would be past dark if they tried to get to Eliasville . And they would probably have to wait on the freighters anyway . They rested in the bunkhouse till evening and went to granny Ruth's for supper .
Granny took their order and asked Steve and John ...What happened to that tall cowboy Ranger that came in here with Captain Coffee a while back . Did the fool ever ask that girl to marry him ! John said ...Yes ma'am ! We been stationed at his ranch , He's a Ranger Captain now and he did ask her . They are going to get married if they can ever get to town .
She told them ...You tell that man to bring that girl in here to meet me next they come ta Fort Graham ...You hear ! They all said ...Yes ma'am ! She left and Steve said ...Have ya'll noticed she resembles Lucy ! They all looked and danged if she didn't !

Granny took their order and asked Steve and John ...What happened to that tall cowboy Ranger that came in here with Captain Coffee a while back . Did the fool ever ask that girl to marry him ! John said ...Yes ma'am ! We been stationed at his ranch , He's a Ranger Captain now and he did ask her . They are going to get married if they can ever get to town .
She told them ...You tell that man to bring that girl in here to meet me next they come ta Fort Graham ...You hear ! They all said ...Yes ma'am ! She left and Steve said ...Have ya'll noticed she resembles Lucy ! They all looked and danged if she didn't !

They enjoyed their refried beans , rice and enchiladas and left for the bunkhouse . They past a general store and Don said ...Ya'll go on , I'm going to look around in the store . He bought Rosa a small sack of rock candy , he got Lucy two bottles of Garrett snuff and two plugs of Brown's Mule and heck he just bought everyone a small gift .
When Don put his horse up and went in the bunkhouse Captain Tom was there talking to Steve and John . Don walked in and Captain Tom said ...I want to talk to you ! Don thought he was in trouble but couldn't imagine why . Don stood and was silent . Captain Tom said ...You three are more men than when you left this headquarters . I figured you all would fail . But you are being responsible and acting like Rangers ...WHY ? Don slowly said ...It's the people at the ranch sir . Wade , her , Zeke , Ed and all of them have taught by example . Captain Tom asked why or how can a woman , a black man , a crew of Mextex help change you ?
Don thought and said ...We see who they are sir , we want to be like them . We work for their respect , Ed Rawlins told us to EARN his respect and Captain that is a tall order . These people are willing to give their lives for one another sir . We are trying sir .

Captain Tom turned to leave then turned back around and told Don ...I have received confirmation of telegraph dispatches from many commands . Ed Rawlins is being well prayed for in West Texas ! When do you leave ? Don said ...In the morning early sir . We want to get back to the ranch as soon as possible with all that's happening now . Captain Tom said ...Be careful going back . He turned and left .
