A civilian did some "magnet fishing" in a small pond just north of Boston.
He found an Uzi submachine gun first. Cops were called. Then he retrieved a .40 Glock, a Colt Cobra revolver, and another pistol and a revolver, which were not further ID'd. All were loaded.

A police scuba team was then summoned, but they did not find any further firearms. The North Shore of Boston is Mafia territory, but I suppose it could have been non-Mafia operators. YMMV.

My thought was that it must be a very strong magnet to pull that stuff from the muck at the bottom.

It sounds like fake news because Massachusetts has strict gun control.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Given the horrible boating skills shown by gun owners lately, magnet fishing could be very profitable,

Why would you call the police?

Oh sorry, it would be illegal to possess that gun in MA.

I’m stupid.

This sounds odd to me. Why in the world would someone go magnet fishing?

To have a cover story. Commit the crime and toss the gun(s) in the pond, then go back years later and claim to have found them and call the police to notify them of what you found. They would never suspect the person that found them magnet fishing, right?

I suspect its somewhat like the hobby of metal detecting...
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

Where I grew up on the northeast, People used to use magnets to troll for 18th-century cannonballs.
