Rifle Qual - TDSA, TX

As soon as I read "qualify" I figured you would get in on 1st try- well done. Sounds like a place I'd be comfortable shooting... I like that he weeds out and not just anyone can go shoot.... did he have a certain MOA @ 100 as a pass/fail? I get you probably can't share the questions but were they safety related or shooting focused?

Good to see TDSA’s rifle range has expanded. When I was a member several years ago, it only went out to 200 yds.

I shoot out there with a buddy (it’s too far if a drive for me to be a member) a couple times a year. If he would just do something about the water it’d be a great range. That qualm aside I enjoy the bays and ability to shoot steel on most.

thanks, yes to far for us to run to use the long range, but it may be added to the bucket list.

what were the 3 questions? I imagine they are geared towards mature responsible answers.


me..why do you want to be accurate at 100 yards? my answer would be so i can better sneak up on the hogs we harvest for cooking

or why would 100 , 200 or 300 yards be good for me? because it takes mental actions to ensure you are focused and the resulting mental good job for understanding flight time, windage and real life feedback when it goes PING.
i love to able to practice and make adjustments to get that warm fuzzy of "hey you are doing a great group" range time is relaxing

one thing that sort of stood out. is you miss a target and have to wait until next day to try again? maybe i took that out of context
but going to the range is imo so you can practice, yes you may miss your ideal grouping, but its in a safe controlled area so you can work at being your best.
for me i go through lots of lead based items at the range to ever improve and seek that moment when it just all goes right and groupings fall in perfect. i thought of applying it to the golf course, "hey bud you sliced" now go home until tomorrow and try again

As far as the shooting test... and if you can't pass the 100y test... you really need to go home and get your stuff figured out.

With the 300 yard test it is perhaps a bit on the tough side to send someone home if they can't hit 3 for 3 on that steel plate. It is a difficult standard, reminiscent of the SOTIC standard, but they are serious about only allowing capable shooters on the 400y range in that no bullets should ever be leaving the property.

agree, but where would you go home to practice and remove the issue that caused you to mess up? we can academic at home all day, but until the item is hurling towards a target, there is no way to verify your training. 300 yards imo is a HARD pill, and yes we never want rounds accidentally going off range NEVER EVER EVER. for me i have a 100 foot area i can bore-sight with a my laser round to play with scope settings and not get neighbors nervous.
i just thought it was weird policy.

Once you finish the 100y qual, you can practice all you want on the 300y target. The 300y and 400y quals are required for the 400y range only.

Andy, how does that adjustable comb mount on your stock? Is it screwed into the stock or does it just clamp on?

Reason I ask is for my 870. The factory stock is just fine for sighting down the barrel, but is too low when I swap to my rifled slug barrel with the cantilever mounted scope. Been trying to find something that would allow for this, and what I see on your .308 looks like just the ticket for me.
