Information on Non-Resident Utah CCW Permit.....

#1

Post by AggieMM »

After doing a little research, and asking some questions. This is what I was told:
Probably the best first step you can take is to contact a Utah Certified
CCW Instructor, and find out when they will be providing their next
training course and how much they charge for it. A good instructor will
also provide you with all the necessary paperwork, and provide you with
a check list of things to do to complete the paperwork. Once you've got
the training course out of the way it's really just a matter of getting
all the needed paperwork completed and then submitted along with the
required processing fees. My personal experience with getting my CCW
permit probably took me about a month and around $150 for everything
from the time I signed up and paid for the class to the time I paid the
cashier at the BCI's office. Your mileage and experience will most
likely differ. It took around another 2 months to receive my permit in
the mail, but they also told me it was a busy time for them. I renewed
my permit about a year ago, and that took about two hours at the BCI's
office and cost me around $30. I've since moved to Texas and became a
non-resident permit holder myself.

Keep in mind to that the requirements for resident and non-resident are
the same, with the only real difference being you’re out of state
permanent address.
The list of certified Utah instructors (In state and Out of state) can be found at:

Certified Utah Instructors

So, based upon the information provided, if you're looking for the right to carry in Alabama, then the New Hampshire Non-Resident permit is the inexpensive / quick way. However, if you need Ohio and Washington too, then you can get a Utah permit, just takes a little longer and costs more.

Just my $0.02.

During my last renewal for Texas, the instructor offered to do the Utah application for an extra 20bucks. I bit. He gave me the application to complete in class and provided the extra photographs and course/range certification. I seem to recall the fee from Utah at around $65.00 or so, but i could be wrong about. The license took about 10 to 14 days in the mail (note: I included a copy of my Texas CHL with the application so they may have sent it out quickly because of that. I did get a letter with the license saying that if anything showed up on the background check, it would be revolked, it wasn't revolked  ) . Pretty easy.

It is true that NH is cheaper and easier to obtain (I think you just have to mail them an application and a copy of your Texas CHL), but I was already in the class and mainly went to Utah route just because it was offered by the instructor and I liked the fact that he offered the extra services.

I thought Utah classes had to be taken in Utah; I guess not. Maybe I was thinking of Nevada.

The instructor I have been using for CHL is listed on the Utah web site link above (Certified Utah Instructors) as being an approved out of state instructor. Take a look, they list about eight or ten in Texas.

I just laid it all out like a real geek in a spreadsheet...

Even though the non-res NH permit gives you Alabama and NH obviously for only $20 and a mail in application...

For $59, a class by a certified UT instructor here in Texas, and mail all the stuff in...You get the same as NH offers, yet 3 more states than the other option...

Doesn't do you any good to get all three, unless you like spending a little more $$$...

A Utah/Texas combo gets you 33 states...5 more than just the Texas license alone...And the UT is good for 5 years like Texas...

Cost is $140 or $70 for the Texas, and $59 for the Utah...plus the class costs...

Not too shabby...With just the Utah license, you get Alabama, Minnesota, New Hampshire (anyway), Ohio and Washington...On top of what Texas has already...

Good catch on Minnesota, I missed that one. I have updated the map.

However, from what I read, New Hampshire doesn't recognize the Non-Resident Utah Permit.

Dumb question:
Why don't we have reciprocity with Washington?

You're right...I based my tally on what the "license tool" compiled for me with the two licenses Texas and Utah...I forgot to check the reversed condition...

So yeah, scratch NH if you choose to get the TX/UT combo...

Heck...Who wants to go to NH anyway...

someone from another forum sent this to me so i thought i would pass it on. http://www.utccw.com is offering online training for Utah for $49.00 and they'll mail you the signed application and a blank fingerprint card. It would be up to you to obtain the required photo and get the print card completed.

I'm not sure i would want to do this online. I liked the fact that the Texas CHL instructor i've been using handles everything at the same time and does the printing and photo's himself.

Cause it rains all the time in Washington and your Texas guns would rust.

With the online UT CCW course, I might do that instead of NH. I don't plan on visiting NH, but the extra ones that UT gives me might come in handy. I mainly want it for AL, so either UT of NH works for that one... Hmmm.
