This thread is fairly interesting to me as I think it's one of the more likely types of things that could happen in the US or parts of the US. More likely than the all out 100% grid down zombie apocalypse scenario, that can only be survived in a giant steel bunker under Cheyenne Mountain. It is perhaps something a suburban American could "prep" for, at least to some extent.

In 1998 I was offered a 2-3 year position in South Africa with my company. The location was in Centurion, between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The violence in that area at that time was very bad. In the previous 12 months there had been almost 400 armored car robberies where the other vehicles near them had been shot with armor-piercing rounds to disable them and block in the armored car so it could be swarmed and shot up. It happened to one of our expatriates. Luckily her company assigned driver (body guard) had the smarts to get it off the road before it came to a stop and the armored car passed them before being blocked in and them potentially getting caught in the crossfire.

There was also a British family (Dad, Mom and 2 small children) that lived right across the street from my to-be boss that were executed in their home at night. Construction crews were bringing in people hidden in their vans during the morning count. When checking out in the evening, during a more thorough inspection the count would match what people they counted going in that morning. There would be 2-3 that would stay behind and rob homes at night. Sadly the family confronted them when they heard noises and they killed them all.

Needless to say, I decided it was no place to raise a 5 year old daughter at that time, so chose to move to Dallas for a subsequent job offer with our company.

South Africa used to be one of the most civilized just like Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) used to be one of the most prosperous with both agricultural exports and mineral mining. Vast natural resources.
