REI Pressuring Vista (Savage Arms)

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

REI Pressuring Vista (Savage Arms)

#1

Post by troglodyte »

I ran across this yesterday.

https://newsroom.rei.com/company-inform ... utdoor.htm

"This morning we learned that Vista does not plan to make a public statement that outlines a clear plan of action (in regards to gun violence). As a result, we have decided to place a hold on future orders of products that Vista sells through REI while we assess how Vista proceeds."

Vista seems to be contemplating getting rid of some of their lines, including Savage/Stevens.

http://news.vistaoutdoor.com/2018-05-01 ... ation-Plan

"The company plans to explore strategic options for assets that fall outside of these product categories, including its remaining Sports Protection brands (e.g. Bell, Giro, and Blackburn), Jimmy Styks paddle boards, and Savage and Stevens firearms."

I haven't spent a lot of money at REI but I won't be spending any more.

Vista was looking to shed product lines before the progressive socialists failed to prevent the Florida school shooter.
Hopefully Savage and Stevens will find new owners to continue the brands.

I have an REI membership from decades ago. Rarely shop there and won't again. I wrote them a maybe slightly rude note about it.

EXTREMELY disappointed to hear of your position regarding Vista Outdoor. As an honest, law abiding citizen who values our nation and it's freedoms and rights, I will not darken your doorway again to risk triggering someone with my large expenditures or my common sense. Hopefully you will either come to your senses and reverse this ignorant decision or go the way of the dodo.

Got the following reply from them.

Greetings Leo,

Thanks for emailing the co-op, and your feedback regarding Vista Outdoor.

Please read REI's statement on our newsroom at https://newsroom.rei.com/company-inform ... utdoor.htm

Best,

I love to be outdoors and my wife and I backpack so REI has been a great company for equipment and clothing. It's been bothering me since March that REI got into political commentary. I recently sent them an email because they also now require presenters to avoid political commentary. I"ll see what their reply is and post it later.

Most interesting is that rei expects a statement from it's vendors... more people die from drunk driving than shooting but I bet they don't require a statement from the maker of the flasks they sell or the hydration bladders marketed as holding a bottle of wine for floating the river. :confused5

I have an REI membership .....or had.....I think it expired recently..... but I have no intention of renewing it. I don’t shop there often enough to take advantage of the cost savings against the cost of membership, but until now, I’ve maintained it on the theoretical advantage of having it if I decided to do some major outdoors-related shopping trip. But given this whole story, I see no reason to renew. It’s not like I NEED to have it.

There is no renewal...once you pay the original $20 membership fee its lifetime.

When I was hiking a lot I used to shop enough at REI to get a few "dividend" dollars back every year. This year when my "dividend" came in it was only $2.00 due to one purchase I made early last year. Haven't been back, nor will I go back. Should I need additional gear I'll find local outfitters to shop.

For those of you in the Dallas area looking for a sporting goods store (backpacking, climbing, et cet·er·a) that doesn't engage in political commentary, my family and I have been happy with Mountain Sports Outdoor.

Google link.

As far as REI is concerned, meh play stupic games and win stupid prizes. Including severely reduced customer base as the second amendment supporters have a very long memory and the left isn't going to 'reward' your virtue signalling. Or if they do it wont be for long....

Thanks for that link. Driven past that place many times thinking I need to stop in there sometime.
