KS: KU professor won’t hold office hours because of campus carry

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

What’s more, Professor Eric Rath of the History and East Asian Studies departments also informs students in the syllabus: “With guns allowed on campus, I no longer feel safe having visitors in my office; so instead of in person office hours, I am available for consultation via email or Skype on the hours indicated above and by appointment. Should you wish to meet in person, the appointment will be at a secure or public location of my choosing, but not my office. Please read the statement about concealed weapons at the end of the syllabus.”
In other news:
“KU Public Safety officials said crime on the Lawrence campus declined 13 percent from 2016 to 2017. In the first six months of permitted concealed guns on campus, there have been no criminal weapons violations,” the Kansas City Star reported in March. “KU Public Safety attributes the drop in crime to steps the university took to improve campus security after the legalization of concealed carry.”

I think that the professor is within his rights to feel that way. Students aren't under any obligation to disclose whether they're carrying to him, and he has no right to expect an honest answer if he asks.

The larger question is: is he capable of keeping his bias out of the classroom? Looking at how much effort he expended upon a random tangent in his syllabus, I wonder.

Well, consider this: If a student DID want to harm him, they would simply
harm him at the place of the professor's choosing.

Would meeting at Starbucks instead of his office bestow a top-to-toe Kevlar shield upon the professor?

Just sayin'......

The only thing he’s afraid of is not getting his way, typical liberal.

I hope one of his students points that out to him.

When my private university opted out of campus carry, I placed this notice on my office door-

I can only imagine the professor's students will be devastated by not being able visit the professor in his office. After all, courses such as the professor's "History of Sushi" and "Beer, Saki, and Tea Beverages in Japanese History" seem likely to be quite demanding -gastronomically, as well as intellectually.
