Regarding the piece's point that gun control existed both in colonial times and in the Old West, civil liberties, including freedom of speech, have advanced a lot from those days. Does the author intend to hold up those times of examples of how civil liberties should be respected generally?

He was promptly fired and from what I know is still languishing in anonymity...where he belongs..

This is a flat out lie. The AR15 has been available for commercial sale to the general public since 1964.
