Regarding the piece's point that gun control existed both in colonial times and in the Old West, civil liberties, including freedom of speech, have advanced a lot from those days. Does the author intend to hold up those times of examples of how civil liberties should be respected generally?

...and guys like D. Metcalf tried to sound convincing in his stealth gun control baloney.

He was promptly fired and from what I know is still languishing in anonymity...where he belongs..

Quoting the article:
It doesn’t connect up with that phenomenon, which started in 1989 when a gunman shot up an elementary school. [The law] had nothing to say about assault weapons because they weren’t available for civilian purchase and gun owners weren’t interested in assault weapons; sales were tiny until the mid 1980s, when the Chinese dumped cheap assault weapons on the American market and sales began to take off.
This is a flat out lie. The AR15 has been available for commercial sale to the general public since 1964.
