NYT considers CZ's role in providing poaching rifles to Africa.

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

The above link is to the New York Times article which examines the alleged link between CZ/CZUB/CZ-USA and CZ Safari Classic hunting rifles found at the scene of poaching crime sites in Mozambique and South Africa. There are plenty of photos in this link too.

The rifles in question generally are described as .375, but .416's are also mentioned.

CZ denies responsibility for the problem, saying that they provided guns to legal channels.

IMHO, if CZ knew that their rifles were being used to poach, they should be ashamed of themselves.

But poachers are going to poach, so let's blame the poachers instead of their preferred firearms.

No different than blaming Glock for an armed robbery. As long as the mfg sells through licensed dealers, they can't know where they go after that. Major mfgs are not going to risk their reputations by selling through back-channels.

What percentage of the poachers are using AKs? Further, how much does the average poaching weapon cost? A CZ 550 Safari Classic runs $3300 used and in the USA. If CZ were guilty, the relatively small community of folks who hunt Africa would turn on them forever. Comlare that with selling multi thousand dollar rifles into a market of poor people where the chief competitor is a $150 AKM. You absolutely can take a rhino down with an AKM oresuming that you're in a car and plan to shoot it until it slows enough to allow you to chainsaw off its horn. Poachers don't care about fair chase or the suffering of their prey.

The economics of CZ trying to corner the South African poacher demographic make literally ZERO sense to me.

I bet a bunch of Land Rovers and Japanese vehicles were also involved. Vehicle bans are not part of the democratic agenda (yet).

I doubt CZ knowingly provides rifles to poachers in Africa.

However, to the extent ivory poachers use a bolt action heavy rifle (i.e. an "elephant gun") rather than the ubiquitous AK, that should increase the likelihood of a clean kill (reducing suffering) and limit collateral damage to other animals nearby.

Right? :headscratch

Sorry, but the NYT never equaled truth...

"Poachers are going to poach" Must have been 50+ years ago now, and Uncle of mine was doing missionary work in Africa. While driving down a road he saw two men hide what they were carrying beside the road, his guide said that they were poachers. They stopped where the men hid what they were carrying, turned out to be two spears about 10 feet long each. Uncle brought the spears home as souvenirs and displayed them until his house burned to the ground probably 30 years later.
