Now That's Funny Right There...

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – A pastor in an affluent suburb of Portland may have run afoul of Oregon law when he transferred an AR-15 assault rifle that he won in a softball league raffle to a gun-owning friend for safekeeping without performing a background check.

Oregon State Police spokesman Capt. Bill Fugate confirmed Tuesday to The Associated Press that his agency would open an investigation.

Fugate says the decision of whether or not to charge the Rev. Jeremy Lucas, of Christ Church Episcopal Parish in Lake Oswego, would fall to the local district attorney's office.

Lucas drew national attention last week when he used $3,000 in church funds to buy as many of the raffle tickets as he could.

Lucas has said he wanted to win so he could destroy the gun.
I really hope the reverend is not prosecuted. But do you think a "regular" citizen would get the benefit of the doubt from the prosecutor?

I'd be a bit upset that the reverend spent $3k in church funds to buy the tickets. Any why bother giving the gun to a friend for "safe keeping" when his plan is to destroy it? Why not just give the cops a call and turn it over to them?

why not just buy a $600 off the shelf AR to destroy, thereby saving the church $2400 while still making the same political statement........

How about: "An ironic incongruity in which I personally find some level of amusement."

Let me reiterate - I wish the pastor no ill will or legal consequences. I'm sure he is a thoughtful citizen who is concerned about violence in the USA and felt he had an opportunity to "do something."

Based on his actions, it is my assumption that he was probably in favor of the recently passed background check law in Oregon.

It is that situation which I find ironically humorous ("funny").

For those who do not, I'm ok with that, too. :cheers2:

That's kinda what I was thinking.

Some liberal rocket scientist spent $3k to win one rifle when he could have purchased three or more and destroyed those instead of just having a better chance to WIN one to destroy.

Yes but he doesn't care because its not his money. He'll just pass the basket around a few more times the next few Sundays and he'll get another 3 grand to blow on whatever he wants.

He couldn't bear to buy a gun with church money. But raffle tickets are OK.

I'd sure like to know the rest of the story on this one. Something smells fishy about this.

That's really awful that he spent money that was given to bring people to saving faith in Jesus Christ on raffle tickets. He should be ashamed of himself. That is not being a good steward of the funds that were entrusted to him. Tithes and offerings are supposed to further the kingdom of God. I fail to see how making a political statement in this way does that.

Let's go Brandon.

Religious quacks embezzle/misappropriate money all the time. He should be defrocked pronto.

He doesn't taint all truly religious folk as all groups have a percentage of bad actors.

Exactly.

I also think his political position regarding guns is dangerous. If he used my tithe money in such a way I would be infuriated.

He should have just given the AR to one of us. I would have gladly taken it, especially considering that I don't own one, yet.

Still confused as to why, if he wanted to "destroy" said firearm, why "give" it to a gun owning friend? :banghead:
