local word is target was the Deutsch & Deutsch Jewelry store just off the food court, which has a direct entrance into the northeast parking lot.
other local scuttlebutt is between 3 and 7 perps, none of whom were U.S. citizens.
Police response time in McAllen for major crimes is generally 3 minutes or less. Add to that, the mall is on the north side of 1) the municipal international airport and 2) a Border Patrol substation. So that part of town is ALREADY crawling with local, state and federal law enforcement. At least two of the hotels directly adjacent the mall are predominately housing for DPS units on temporary border duty.
Waiting to see if City of McAllen or DPS has a press conference later today........

and for comic relief, we have an unidentified agency's team arriving late to the party and making entry into the mall, losing a mag from an AR in the process (+- 12 seconds in......)

Watching security cam video again, I make it 1 minute 19 seconds from robbers making store entry to a McAllen PD uniform entering followed by two UC's. I'll bet the perps originally thought they'd have more time.

^Do we know for a fact they’re UC or off-duty that follow the uniformed LEO? I almost wonder if orange shirt isn’t an LTC given the unsure nature he portrays in trying the clear around the corner of that wall. Not that I’d do much better, but understanding the concept of “slicing the pie” sure helps. Even then I guess a good majority of cops probably aren’t as well trained in clearing rooms as I would hope they’d be.

Again, I don’t know and that’s why I ask. I’ve been trying to find more info about the individuals in that video but haven’t seen anything about who they are/work for. I for one would love to hear the full details once they emerge.

The word on my police forums is that the first responders were a mix of on duty and off duty officers and LTC who volunteered to help. I am guessing the response time was so short because the robbers let a couple people slide out the door during the robbery (can be seen on the video).

Interesting video of the actual robbery. The first robber in the door goes straight to the guy most likely to be armed. Food for thought.

I have no idea who the plainclothes were. The other side of the right hand wall in the video is the food court. That hallway tbones the seating area about thirty feet to the right of the jewelry store doorway. So probably a third of the diners present saw the robbers mask up, draw guns, and enter. They were probably the ones who reported the jewelry display case smashings as gunshots......
