The homeowner, George Hollingsworth, told police he found damage on his garage door frame on Tuesday, March 12 and suspected somebody had broken into the garage at his home on West Third Street in Marion.
Hollingsworth said his garage was full of clutter and told police he would start going through those items on Wednesday, March 13. When he did, he found his 900-pound antique floor safe tipped over and a body underneath it.

Is there medical term for "stupidly smashed flat"?An autopsy will be scheduled.
The left lies about everything. Truth is a liberal value, and truth is a conservative value, but it has never been a left-wing value. People on the left say whatever advances their immediate agenda. Power is their moral lodestar; therefore, truth is always subservient to it. - Dennis Prager

Acually, the police generally call it, "DRT" - dead right there.

That must have been one REALLY messy garage not to notice a squished person on the floor.

Re: IN: Homeowner finds body under gun safe
Im kinda confused by the story. So the guy noticed his garage was broken into. Called the police. Police came over. LEO(s) did not check the garage to see if the burglar had left. Man says he’ll check it within a couple days to see the if anything is missing. Man then dead dead body in garage under safe and has to call the police back out. Why did he call the police and not have the garage checked by them?

I don’t think the police came out until he found the body.

Maybe the home owner worked the system to get rid of a body for him.
In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law to pursue a natural justice.

1. Per one of the above comments: the police responded but didn't find the body. IMHO, it's not the police's job to sort through an apparent hoarder's junk pile. The homeowner himself told them it would take a while to look through his junk.
2. The body might have been easy to miss upon initial visual inspection. Methinks it was an olfactory-related signature that led the homeowner to find the perp. People get pretty fragrant when they have taken the room temperature challenge (hats off to John Correia of ASP).
3. Some years ago there was 1 or more college men who died when they fought with a beverage dispensing machine and it fell on top of them, killing them. Darwin Award winners all.

" Possible burglary" does not create a forensic team response. All they had to go on was the home owners word, that " maybe" someone had broken into a cluttered garage. Evidently, even the homeowner, could not determine if anything had been taken, with a cursory look.
No conspiracy here, "brain damaged" theif, tries to steal a bigger safe than he could carry.

Re: IN: Homeowner finds body under gun safe
I found the Marion police department Facebook page, and it has a media release that reads almost exactly like the news articles. Given the way it’s worded I don’t believe the police responded to the initial report of a possible burglary Given that the homeowner wasn’t sure there was one.
The police media release does add one new detail though: It says the safe was “suspended“ from a jack.
I also found a YouTube video wherein the garage owner is interviewed and the safe — and the clutter — make an appearance. Video also has a quick shot of a heavy duty floor jack but doesn’t explain why it’s shown.
I get the feeling the garage owner doesn’t live at that house, he just stores stuff there.
Also, it wasn’t a gun safe, just an old safe.
