I'm going to make an educated guess and assume he was breaking in the door when the husband and wife both began firing. It may be that he staggered away and died in the backyard.

What I find most encouraging about this story was that both the husband and wife were firing at the intruder.

Despite the tragic news of a man's death, that just brings a small smile to my face.
