Glock G19: Gen 4 or Gen 5?

#1

Post by Grayling813 »

Looking at adding a Glock G19 to my handgun collection, mainly due to it's widespread use. Curious if anyone has experience with both Gen 4 and Gen 5 to recommend one over the other.

If you are located in DFW area (?), happy to let you try both and decide for your self.

My vote is Gen 3 or Gen 5. I really like the Gen 5. I think it has a few things that push it up a notch.

I HATE the pinky cut out on the Gen 5. I vote gen 4 if you have small- medium hands. If you have large hands I would get a Glock 17. If you don’t mind paying a bit more you can get the 19 gen 5 mos version without the pinky cut out. That would be my preference over all.

Gen 5, no doubt. However, find a Gen 5 without the finger cutout (for the FBI) and with Front Cocking Serations if you can.

I have a G45 and a G19G5MOS. They are the only two I own, I like them much better than the Gen 3. That's why I sold all of them.

Gen 5 frames have changed at least twice since introduced. Hunt around for the one you want. The MOS ones for sure have the newer frame.

Some opinions after shooting them side by side.
  • The two stage recoil spring in the Gen 5 makes a noticeable difference in the recoil. Gen 4 is an easy to shoot 9mm. Gen 5 is just a little easier to get follow up shots.
  • I like the grip surface of the Gen 5 a little better. Gen 4 works fine. Gen 5 is just a little better.
  • I like the magazine release on the Gen 5 a little better. Gen 4 works fine. Gen 5 is just a little bigger and easier to use.
I have and do recommend the 5 to new purchasers. I have not traded my 4 in for a 5. Both are boring and functional.

How well does the 19X conceal, as it’s a full size frame?
This 19X is what I’ve been looking at:

Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions.

Agree on 19X / 45 being superior to previous generations of 19 / 17. Very shootable, very concealable.

im 5'9" 170 and i have no problem concealing it. i carry AIWB with a wing so the belt will bring the grip closer to your body.

Thanks! Compatibility with existing Glock G17 magazines is definitely a requirement since I want to be able to use the same mags in my Ruger PC Carbine.
