Michigan trip

#1

Post by bfm1851 »

I have a trip scheduled to Michigan next month. Quick search did not turn up info I need. Now my Texas LTC is recognized in this state but not sure how I can legally carry in car. All I find is that gun must be unloaded and in locked container in trunk. Is this even if you have a valid license from a state that is recognized? And if so what are you suppose to do, disarm, lock gun up in trunk every time you get in car. Then when stopped retrieve your gun from the trunk?
Any help would be apricated.
Thanks

LTC = CPL in Michigan and with that, the unlicensed rules of unloaded and locked in trunk do not apply. Keep the firearm concealed on your person or in center console or glove box while you are in the vehicle. If you are on a motorcycle, open carry is legal.

Bear in mind that the self defense laws in Michigan are completely different from Texas. What is legal in Texas will get you life in prison in Michigan - so be sure to know the law.

It is against the law in Michigan to carry in a bar - they do not post 51% signs. It is also against the law to sip a beer while carrying, unlike Texas.

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice, but I do have direct action experience in Michigan with CPL / self defense / carry topics.

If you venture down into Ohio, say to hit the famous Tony Packo's, know that stepping foot inside any bar in Ohio, even if you are there to pick up a friend and not drink, while armed is a felony punishable by 10 years in prison. So there is that.

Hope this helps.

If you let me know what part of Michigan you are traveling to, I may be able to recommend some good ranges to visit during your trip.

Thank you for your information. Going to Grand Rapids. There is a quilt show going on and my gal is big into that. Me not so much but going to support. If there was a range close by maybe I could get some time with EDC.

My wife is also an avid and accomplished quilter. I've often been the only one carrying openly at the quilt show, quilting or fabric shop, or quilt museum.

We've driven in our RV from Dallas to Bay City Michigan. When we take trips like that, I refer to
www.handgunlaw.us.

I agree with the comment that the rules are different in each State and it is a good idea to understand some of those differences. Do you notify an officer during a traffic stop that you are armed? Can you carry in a religious building? You just never know what circumstances you might run into in advance and waiting to figure out the rules until that circumstance occurs.

I've not done it personally but flying with firearms isn't supposed to be difficult if you follow the rules. I'd much rather take my chances with that than driving through IL. We followed the rules there, too, but I'm not as comfortable with it as I would like to be.

Flying with a checked gun is pretty routine these days. About the only inconsistency I've found is whether the ticket agent balks at loaded magazines (not in the gun, just loaded and covered in a mag carrier). Best to put ammo in an ammo case or factory box. I forgot my ammo box last trip and it cost me 16 rounds of HST.

Yeah what I read on AA site says ammo must be in original manufacture's box. I figure that to mean no loaded mags, no common ammo boxes. But I did not find if you just put ammo in your checked baggage or with your handguns locked case?

I'm in Michigan now, what everyone else already said about having a TX LTC and carrying on person in vehicle. We flew AA from DFW to Grand Rapids, no issues - ammo in plastic ammo box in same locked case as firearm, I unload my mags just because of inconsistency's at different airports. Last time I flew from GRR back to DFW, the agent was newer and needed assistance when I checked my firearm, but no issues. AA puts a red BSO (baggage service office) tag on the bag so "TSA will know there is a firearm in the bag", Delta did the same. I prefer southwest, they do not put anything on the bags and always pickup at regular baggage claim vs the over size bag pickup.

I've never had a problem with ammo in the bag, outside the locked case. My ammo box won't fit in my locked case, so, I'm grateful it's not been a problem. Murphy's law pretty much guarantees I just jinxed myself saying so  . If I try to check loaded magazines, I keep them in the locked case, not inserted in the gun, of course. I'm doing this less frequently now, since my success rate seems to be dropping.

Even with the red "THERE'S A GUN IN HERE!" tag, my bag comes out on the main carousel half the time. When that happens I like to wheel over to the baggage office and show them that their process isn't worth a dirty diaper.

Came home last night, was the first time we left the airport within 30 minutes of landing with our luggage (including the BSO tagged bag) with AA.

I did have a little trouble with TSA in Grand Rapids, I am ashamed to say I had forgotten one item in my backpack that caused TSA to run it through the scanner twice, then search pack to find my folder pocket knife :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I had forgotten about it :mad5

I was escorted out of the secure area and handed it back, i was able to have one of our bags retrieved and place the knife in the bag and then TSA re-scanned. All in all the TSA agents at GRR were very relaxed and helpful. I am so thankful this happened there and not DFW or Detroit. I would probably have been cavity searched and the knife taken away and not have the options of retrieving the bag from airline or mailing back.

Lesson learned, at least it wasn't a bullet in my backpack. :thumbs2:

Last summer I had an occasion to fly into New York. Of course I did not take my hand gun because, well it's New York. I did have my pocket knife inside my checked baggage when I left DFW. But when I got to my hotel and unpacked the knife was not in my bag??? Must have slipped out during the flight. If you can loss a pocket knife going thru TSA what makes me think my handgun, in its locked case, that has been "declared" and the bag marked will be there when I collect my bags?
