That was pretty stupid even for a criminal. It will be interesting to see if they serve any time. Existing gun laws only work if they are enforced and penalties given. These are the kind who will repeat offend if let out of jail.

AR Pistol with a vertical grip? I don't understand what the issue is there. Is it the AR pistol or the vertical grip?

With a vertical handgrip (Forward) installed an AR pistol is no longer a handgun and becomes an NFA item.

There is one caveat to that rule, and that is if the oal from the end of the buffer tube to the end of the threads (or permanently attached muzzle device, the weapon becomes a “firearm” and may have a vfg. That is unless the rule has changed. Not sure what the barrel length on their weapons were either.
