Troy, Michigan

Post by pt145ss »

So my employer is sending me to Troy Michigan in August for a few days. I see the have ricprocity with TX so I plan on traveling with my carry firearm. Is there anything I should know about their carry laws? Or does anyone know of a good link to read about their carry laws?

On a side note...is there anything there I should go see or do?

Here's a link to the state web site:
http://www.michigan.gov/ag/0,1607,7-164 ... --,00.html

I haven't been there for more than 20 years. The only things that I can recommend are not near Troy:
  • Henry Ford's home at Fair Lane in Dearborn, and the adjoining museum
  • the Detroit riverfront (seriously)
  • the Detroit Greek town
Detroit has a bad reputation, but as with most cities, if there isn't a riot in progress, the violent crime is confined to poor neighborhoods.

NRA / ILA maintains a web site with resources on reciprocity and the specifics of the gun laws in all 50 states. Check it out at:

http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/

Just click on the state of interest and the relevant info appears in a pop up window.

I don't have complete confidence in the NRA site. For example, it says for Michigan,
It is unlawful to carry a concealed pistol in ... a dining room or bar which is
licensed to serve alcohol,...
But the state web site says,
A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises
The only off-limits place I can see where you would go on a short business trip is church.

It is unlawful to possess a firearm in a financial institution, church, court, school, hospital, theater, sports arena, restaurant with a liquor or alcohol license or day care center.

Yikes...the restaurant thing is a little much.

The NRA site is a general guide only, and not a good source for fine distinctions. It's also not always fully updated with the most recent changes. For that you need to go directly to the text of the state statutes.

An excellent source for the level of detail you're looking for is located at http://handgunlaw.us/

Click on the "State Laws" button on the left menu column for a list of each state with its firearms, deadly force, knife, chemical weapon, and body armor laws listed. To get to the info, you'll need to print out the list or write down the sections of the law shown under each column of interest, then click on the name of the state in the left column. This is a link that will take you to the actual statutes. Look up the section numbers you noted, and you're in business.

For example, here's the full text of Michigan's rules on premises where licensed carry is prohibited:

http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(tgydf3 ... cl-28-425o

The home page at Handgunlaw also has a great guide to the reciprocity arrangements among the states. Clicking on the map of the states you have licenses from will show you where they are and are not honored.

There are two more sets of law links at the left side of the menu bar at the top of the Handgunlaw home page. Moving your mouse cursor over them brings up lists of other legal resources, including federal laws, BATF regulations, etc.

This is the best single source I've found for detailed and reliable carry law info. If you can't find what you need here, you probably need to call an attorney.
