I have owned my hunting rifles for for many years. I finally decided to buy a new pistol. Its been 6 years since my last pistol. So I am looking to getting my CHL. My father, uncle and many other family members have their chl. I have 2 uncles that are Deputies and a cousin thats a trooper here in Texas and they all said they werent sure about my situation.
I am wondering if I will be denied for my chl.
It shows on my dps criminal record that I was charged and arrested in 2005 for class b misdemeanor theft by check(check bounced) ,Disposition date of 2005, then it shows Date of Sentence/status 11/2012
I am not understanding why it says 2012 on sentence. But will that keep me from getting my chl. I was hopeing that since the arrest and conviction was in 2005 that it would put me past the 5 year mark.
This is my only criminal charge ever.
Thanks,
Tim c

if you havent done so, order the criminal history via the TX DPS website. there is a procedure there to challenge bad info and they do the work. if the convuctuon date is wrong, they will correct it. the court in question should also be contacted to challenge the date if wrong as well.
Re: Need help to make sure I am eligible for CHL
Regardless of family, a class B misdemeanor theft conviction disqualifies somebody from getting a Texas CHL for five years after they are convicted. It doesn't disqualify them under Federal law from owning or purchasing firearms.
Assuming you didn't get deferred adjudication, or very long probation, I don't have any guesses about the 2012 date.

Tim, go to the clerk for the county in which the case was heard, and get a CERTIFIED copy of the disposition. You have to send it in with your application anyway, so get it now. If it is wrong the clerk there can assist you.dually502 wrote:I have owned my hunting rifles for for many years. I finally decided to buy a new pistol. Its been 6 years since my last pistol. To help clarify, were you convicted? If so, when? Probation? Length of probation?
